I also have the problem with Outlook Express.
I use Windows 2000 SP4 with IE/OE 5.5 and have just installed Avast 4.6 Home edition.
When attempting to send or receive mail in OE I receive:

However, OE send and receive mail if I stop the On-Access Protection ... what must I do to have anti-virus protection in OE?
I have uninstall and reinstall both IE/OE and Avast 4.6, also run a Chkdsk and also reapply SP4, without result.
