This version of Avast on 2 laptops now exhibit "Avast is down, something has gone wrong" when doing a Smart Scan or basic scan.
Coincidentally Windows 10 V1803 2018-10 cumulative update applied.
The scan seems to complete in the background but the Avast interface crashes.

Just preparing laptop again, doing a Macrium Reflect backup then I'll install it again!

Did that Brand New Computer come with a trial version of a 3rd party AV
If so, which one and how was it removed
If there was a trial of a third party AV, check my signature for Successfully Installing Avast.

No AV product installed - quite bloat free actually.
I'm aware of the correct procedure, already tried, so just repeating it isn't going to solve it.

Just a suggestion you may want to try:

1): Download the "Full Offline Installer" for what you are trying to install. Using the On Line Installer can cause problems at times.
     The Offline Installer link is at this thread: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=222453.0
2): Use "Avast Clean" to completely remove the current installation and then reboot.
3): On some computers you may have to Right Click on the Installer File and Select "Run As Administrator"

It doesn't seem that r44flyer has confirmed that he used the offline version.
From experience, tutorials are rarely followed step by step.
If the version downloaded before was an online version, it is possible to think that it is not necessary to download it again when you think you have it on your hard disk

bruce_b insists particularly (in red) on this.
Maybe it's not useless?

I don't insist on anything, just trying to help the OP ... And I still stand by what I say: The Full Offline Installers work better than Stub or OnLine Installers and this seems to hold true for just about any stub installer used. Look at the issues Windows 10 users have MS does an online upgrade .. Takes hours and sometimes does not work correct. But if you download the latest Windows 10 version and then use that to upgrade, it is faster and usually trouble free.

The procedure described #31 - and which r44flyer claims to have followed unsuccessfully  #32 - already mentions that an offline version must be downloaded and used

For a reliable product ALL installers should work correctly.
Offline installer obtained and custom scans work fine so far, existing licence applied and new device added to the account.
However the Smart Scan 'reliably' falls over.
It didn't before on the 18.6.2349 version and before the October Windows updates.

The Smart Scan issue could be either with the code in Avast or it could have something to do with the latest Windows 10 Upgrade .. Avast coders would need to check into it and decide how to fix it. This is just another reason I would want Microsoft to just allow Security Updates and let the end user decide if they need or want to Upgrade Windows 10 with so called "newer features" .. Once it working as I want it, leave it be.

back to performances again

Windows 7 User profile failed to load after this update.

I fixed it by restoring system in Safe Mode and when i logged into account then...Avast UI Failed to load...

Also for some reason Avast had added their extension to Firefox and created a new desktop icon.

Decided to update to the latest version and got the very same issue upon restart - user profile failed to logon. Running Windows 7 SP1 x64 and it's to date with latest updates available from Windows Update. Went into safe mode and then recovered my profile through the Registry. Re-started and managed to log into my profile only to get the Avast UI failed to load error. Booted back into safe mode and uninstalled Avast 18.7.2354 using the Avast uninstaller. Re-booted and re-installed Avast 18.6.2349. Not happy to say the least. Prior to diving into the registry, I spent several hours backing up my data on my C drive in safe mode just in case I wasn't able to recover my user profile.
