I want functionality for AVAST that doesn't update products automatically because that's very bad, I prefer to update manually.

That's exactly what it does for mine, I have no idea why it isn't on yours.

What updated here automatically was AVAST VPN. Do you use Avast VPN? because if you use it it updated automatically.

My signature states what Avast Program I'm using avast! free 23.12.6094 (build 23.12.8700.762) UI 1.0.792 -

Given this is the "Avast Free Antivirus / Premium Security (legacy Pro Antivirus, Internet Security, Premier)" sub forum that is what I'm commenting about.

Quote from: Extract Avast FAQ
Avast SecureLine VPN and Avast Cleanup Premium are integrated into Avast Premium Security, but require separate, paid subscriptions to use. You can purchase a subscription for either product from the Avast Store.

The highlighting above is mine, so if you have a paid subscription for Avast VPN, then it would probably be best to post in the AVAST VPN sub-forum - https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=80.0

I already posted there and nothing was resolved, so I have to post it somewhere that people can see. Now do I understand?

Despite having set the updates to "manual", this time "my" Avast Free antivirus seems to have updated itself automatically; and also with no notifications/questions/warnings at all.

My latest (manual, as usual) update was a couple of months ago and today, when checking the settings, I found out that "Avast Free Antivirus is up to date" with version 23.12.6094, which obviously I never installed.

This is not what I expected, because I disabled automatic updates.

What is the reason for such a behaviour (which actually occurred another time, about two years ago)?

Is there a reliable way to permanently prevent automatic updates?

Even at 23.12 you're outdated. Sometimes there are emergency updates top fix vulnerabilities and there aren't any way of stopping them that I know of.

It would then be useful, in my opinion, for the developers to insert automatic (and non-deactivable) notifications to inform the user that the update is mandatory.
Something like:

"Dear Avast user, we inform you that for important security reasons your program will now be automatically updated to the new version xx even though you have deactivated automatic updates, which will remain deactivated afterwords".

Such an easy addition would avoid any worries or doubts, on the part of the user, about possible malfunctions of the software.

But what is your fear about having settings with automatic updates?  I have the automatic ones and have never had any problems, except for that version which always displayed the Safe Price browser screen but after various reports in the Avast forum in just a few days it resolved with an update.
Thank you and good day!

I would argue that just one instance of this happening is enough reason to never want to have my version automatically update again. Fool me once, etc.

But even aside from that, the reason someone wouldn't want automatic updates is irrelevant. If Avast offers options to not have updates done automatically, that should either apply across the board with all updates or, like menziller stated, the user should be made aware that a.) an update took place and b.) it is an emergency update that required to be done automatically for that current version and c.) advise if a restart is required to fully implement said update, which they are inconsistent at doing.

Exactly bringing clarity to the user and mainly transparency to the company explaining what is happening.

Well, talking about "fear" is undue, I think. I would rather say "caution", wariness.

Anyone who has been involved with IT for some time knows well that, in general, it is quite "dangerous" to put your hands on something that is actually working reasonably well, without particular problems.
Experience (unless too short) teaches that any modification can... break the magic spell and create problems of various kinds, which can prove complicated to understand and solve.

That's the main reason why, in my opinion, before making any software updates of any kind (and especially with work-dedicated devices and "system wide" products like OS, antivirus...) it's better to be sure they're actually worth the risks.

Yeah, seems like they've been a day late with the forum posts announcing what's new the last couple of updates.

I don't understand why it takes so long to update the forum. where everyone anxiously waits for the news.
The avast team was not the first time to have delays, please do not delay the news.

Well, if it means that they're aware of the Notification date issue that users are experiencing in the other thread, maybe they'll fix that and let us know that they fixed it.

the link posted by davidR on the other thread is exactly the same as the one posted by lukas.hasik at the start of this thread.
from DavidR http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
and
from lukas.hasik at top https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe

626 MB each (it was 619MB for 23.12... yesterday)

This is normal and known, avast only has a link that redirects to the latest version and the latest version is ..... 24.1.

It's just that no one from avast (lukas.hasik?) has posted a new topic about the new version on the forum. ;)
otherwise a manual search for program updates by the UI should also suggest the 24.1
