cannot update avast
« on: April 24, 2004, 04:32:15 AM »
Just downloaded Avast! HOme4.1. 389. however, there seems to be a problem as i cannot update Avast. The automatic update fails everytime as they say that they cannot connect to the server or the server is down.
Help pls?

Are you sure it's not a firewall related problem?
Do you use a proxy filter?

We need more information to help you: your OS, browser (and its version), etc.  ;)

Apparently the problem of the server being down has been fixed but,
the notification that the file has been updated is no longer being sent.

You must be behind a firewall and arent allowing avast to do it's updates.   I also use a firewall ( ZoneAlarm) but, i'm not having any problems with updates.

herring,

Since you are using XP, the built in firewall is probably active and may be causing the problem. Since I do not use XP (using W98SE), I'm not sure how you should set (or disable) the XP firewall. I am sure others here can help you with that.    :)

From what I have read, the XP firewall isn't very good. Should you decide to disable it, be sure to install another firewall ... such as Zone Alarm, Sygate, etc.    :D

welcome herring! :)
here is what I found on my WinXP Home for your firewall...I don't know if it would be different for Pro but you could still check it.
HTH,
cojo

Open Network Connections
Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select one of the following:
To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.
To disable Internet Connection Firewall, clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.
 Notes

To open Network Connections, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
You must be logged on as a computer administrator to complete this procedure.
If you clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box, the firewall on your computer is disabled, and your network is vulnerable to intrusions.
You should not enable Internet Connection Firewall on virtual private networking (VPN) connections or on client computers because ICF will interfere with file and printer sharing.
ICF cannot be enabled on the private connections of the Internet Connection Sharing host computer.
Internet Connection Sharing, Internet Connection Firewall, Discovery and Control, and Network Bridge are not available on Windows XP 64-Bit Edition
