am I right in thinking that the problem only manifests itself to those who have previously registered at the support.avast.com site?

As per Yokenny, no. I only gave you a scenario that allows me to reproduce the problem about 50% of the time. I am on Vista while Yokenny is on XP, I believe.

avast needs to talk to their ISP.  The support.avast.com site is un-contactable yet again right now.

I don't think there's any yet again here.
Yes, it's down at the moment, but I'd say it's something "new", nothing that already happened previously.

Not sure if the site is totally repaired as yet. I can peruse the site but as soon as I attempt to login AND select 'remember me', I get the dreaded blank page.
