Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) aka Morro Download Ends

Yesterday Microsoft released its new anti-virus program "Microsoft Security Essentials" aka Morro to public. It was announced that the free beta would be available only for first 75,000 users. Today Microsoft has pulled off the free download link and now you'll no longer be able to download it. The official page shows:

Alert!

Thank you for your interest in joining the Microsoft® Security Essentials Beta. We are not accepting additional participants at this time. Please check back at later a date for possible additional availability.

If you have not downloaded it yet, no need to worry. There would be another beta available for public very soon. So stay tuned with us: http://www.askvg.com/microsoft-security-essentials-mse-aka-morro-download-ends/

Well, maybe I've deleted some entries (or a registry cleaner). I can't find it...

Did you find where Defender went? I thought I had it installed on this computer, but after loading and running MSE, I went to look for Defender to uninstall and only found an empty folder with the setup facility in it. I guess I can't have installed it. Unless MSE auto-replaced it, but I've never seen anything like that happen.

Windows Defender is replaced by MSE.

It starts hidden which I don't like as I like to see that it is active.

I don't have a Windows Defender folder anymore... It was replaced by MSE like YoKenny said.
I've booted, waited 5 minutes, it did not update alone. Bad! We need to manually get the update :P

Tech,
Still in beta  at this time the best thing to do is to check for updates manually.

I guess the folder was still there because I had stored the setup facility in it. Otherwise it would have been total replacement I guess. And yes I'm having to update manually on the first day. I've scheduled update / scan tomorrow morning so see how goes.

Off topic / I've got some other problems on this computer - to do with outdated software that has got in the way of things - to the point that an infection slipped in. I've tidied up okay but I'm going to have to do away with IBM toolbox, which wants to operate in real-time but isn't supported by the service link now provided. I have the programs disabled at the moment, including a general software organiser program from Software.com that sorts updates, downloads, and drivers etc...from what I can tell - also interactive, and also in thick of things when malware slipped through. The actual event -- a request for update from IBMAccessSupport, the control program, that timed out because the destination service has now become something different.

I seem to have everything back to normal now.
avast picked up the malware in a scan. I've still got MSE and avast running side by side. But like I said above, I have to put paid to the outdated IBM software before I can freely watch the  AVs run.

Tech,
Auto updates are handled through the Windows Update Function in the Control Panel.
If you've turned auto updates on, then it will also update Microsoft Security Essentials.

This is lame. I'll have to confirm every damn update hy hand just because i don't want to use Windows Update in Automatic mode because it always rebooted my system in the middle of something. Preferably a 12 hour offline 3D renderer in Bryce...

it doesn't force you to restart your pc, it's your choice to restart as it informs you.

Windows Updates are usually sent on Patch Tuesday which is the second Tuesday of the month so you could set Updates to Download updates but don't install them or at least Notify me about updates but do not download nor install them.

Yes it does. At least on Vista. It give you a 10 minutes warning, then boot :P

Auto updates are handled through the Windows Update Function in the Control Panel.
Another negative point. Now you have your antivirus depending on Windows Updates ::)

They updates 2-3 times per day.
And what happen if Windows Updates are run just once per day ::)

I have my MSE settings to schedule a quick scan at 9am on a daily basis. I have it set to check for the latest virus & spyware definitions before running the scan. This morning the tasks were performed to schedule.

The current definitons were created 6/25/2009 at 1.55 AM.
Virus definitions version:        1.61.369.0
Spyware definitions version:   1.61.369.0

I haven't had time to look for a log of the scan as yet. I may not find time.

As I said  before, I am running MSE alongside (as complement to) avast AV.
avast update ran without issue about 30 mins before MSE scan.

Only early days so far. I'm not expecting miracles from MSE.
If it simply runs in real-time without issue as a second opinion for my resident AV, then I will be more than happy.

Edit - sorry, I should have said. I'm running XP early version, converted across from to NTFS from FAT as part of Windows updates to SP3. Firewall is Outpost 2009 free. And as usual, Scotty is on duty at WinPatrol interface.
