Your program version .377 isn't the latest, so I don't know if that is an issue. However, I would say there is little point in trying to find a fault unless you have the latest version 5.0.396 installed.

Try a manual Program update, a bit of a problem if your system is off-line, in which case you are going to have to download the latest version - avast 5.0.396 free antivirus - http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1968.html?2010-01-29.

It may be best to do a clean install rather than an install over the top of 5.0.377.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD/USB stick, etc,.
  • 1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
  • 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot.  If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  • 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Thanks

I finally got it. It was just as you said. Use Add/Remove and then use that clean tool.
Reboot, Reinstall and Update.

Thanks

Hi folks,
like the first post of samlonewolf I have the same problem: unable to update manually with the pack from "http://www.avast.com/download-update". Even after deinstalling avast v. 5.0.377, cleaning with avast 5 removal tool and ccleaner, reboot and install v. 5.0.396 ...
I have a Pentium III notebook, WinXP SP3, ZoneAlarm Pro firewall is open to AvastSvc.exe and avast.setup.
I can force update from the avast-UI but it lasts 10 times as long as v. 4.8 (about 10 minutes with a dial-up connection). Any ideas?
THX!

I am facing problem in updating the virus definition.
I have installed AVAST 5.0.418. I am unable to update this program by using its "update engine and virus definitions ".
It show an error "cannot connect to download824.avast.com (174.120.185.66:80)"
The same error is received with "AVAST 5.0.396"
Also, the new version (avast 5.0.418 or 5.0.396) is killing the speed of my system.
Earlier I had AVAST  4.8. It worked well with the system. It was very good and based on its performance, I replaced with its new version.
I am disappointed to see that new version is making my system very slow and unable to update.
The OS I am using is Vista home premium SP2 on my laptop-core2duo 2.2 Ghz+3 Gb RAM+
Quick suggestions are welcome.

I have today upgraded from Avast! v4.8 Free to v5.0.418 Free and the program does not update automatically or can I update manually.  The update page when using manual update, just shows "Updating.... Step 1/2 Initializing, please wait" and nothing happens, no error messages, no firewall blocking message - nothing for as long as I leave it which in the last instant was 2 hours.

There was never any problem with 4.8 and preceding versions updating automatically and the settings for connection to the internet are the same.  I am using Windows XP Home SP3 and permanently connected to the internet, so please could someone explain why this is happening.  I have not tried a download of the virus definition file because I shouldn't have to if this program updates automatically.

Further to my previous message, I can report all is well after a re-boot and Avast immediately updated automatically as it always has in the past.  Big sigh of relief! ;D

Hello DaviR

Earlier I posted the avast5.0.418 update problem.
I am not able to sort out the update failure. Even, manual update doesn't work.
Do I need to change the update setting?

You aren't facing the same problem as the original poster:

I tried to update manually my avast 5.0 but when i launch the vpsupd program i have the folling error message:

can't install VPS update. Please report follong errorcodes:
Ver:5.0.377
SI:0x00000002
ST:0xFFFFFFFE
LE:0x00000000

As you aren't getting the same error, yours is more likely to be firewall blocking.

- What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update the engine and virus definitions option, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.
