happy avast user,

You have had an answer to this type of question before, from one of the avast! devs (to which there was no reply):
3. I look at shoe results and results are as follows:  Archive Password Protected
My question is why does this result come up in the new Avast 5.1.864 program and yet I never got this message in ANY of the 5.0 programs?

It's hardly connected to the program version, as the related functionality is fully inside of the virus definitions. Maybe some new files appeared on your disk?
Hard to say more without knowing (a few examples of) the filenames in question ;)

Those files, judging from what I have found by searching the folder MFADATA, seem to be connected to AVG somehow:
http://forums.cnet.com/7723-19703_102-504594.html#message5030629
That would make sense seeing as how the OP said he was going "back" to AVG. That implies that AVG had been installed before and maybe not completely removed. The real issue though is that it doesn't make any difference if those files are scanned or not since they're archives and can do no harm at all. They probably could also be safely deleted.

Hello, I have updated avast! to v5.1.889 and after having restarted the computer the internet module always appears disabled, until I enter the program and click the Fix button. Please review this error. Thanks.

If you got the free version, you just need to make a registration via GUI or an offline registration.
http://public.avast.com/supp/home/home.htm (it says installation but also includes the guide How to make a registration via GUI too)

http://public.avast.com/supp/a5f_or/A5F_OfflineRegistration.htm (offline registration)

If your version is not the free version, you need to buy a key license on avast! website. (www.avast.com)

You would be better to start a new topic for this and people will be able to help directly in that topic. It would just be lost and confused in this topic that stretches to 17 pages already.

On Windows 7 Pro pc, had to system restore 4 times; twice uninstalled Avast version 5.1.889.  I kept getting a com surrogate error and many of my programs stopped working:
I had the same experience on update to 5.1.889. My Son's laptop did this. quite a few failing executables and services including Windows Family safety, Networx, com surrogate and so on. Tried removing via safe mode and doing a clean install of 5.1.889, but that didn't work either.
In the end had to boot to safe mode again to remove Avast 5.1.889 and then re-install 5.0.677 which I happended to have still around.
Son's Laptop is ACER 1810TZ (intel) running windows 7 Home 64-bit
My desktop had same problem Windows 7 Untimate 64-bit again , but AMD PhenomII.
Then my father called to say his laptop (Toshiba) intel running 64Bit Win7 (Home) was failing. Turned out to be the same thing. All 3 fine when back to 5.0.677

I have rated and recommended Avast to people for a long time, but for me and my family this update was not a good one.

@maxihod

I doubt if avast was responding to genetics or family resemblance - is there any common thread in your systems linking your family - previous antivirus, firewall, backup software etc?

All of a sudden nearly all my programs began crashing (including Firefox, MS Word, Chrome, MS Excel, Picassa, Windows Media Player, etc) with the popup <prg name> has stopped working. Windows can search online for a solution. The only program that worked was IE8. After many hours of troubleshooting, I narrowed it down to the latest Avast free update. I have now uninstalled Avast and everything is working normally.

I have a Windows 7 / 64bit Asus ul30vt laptop.  I have always used Avast and am at a loss to which antivirus software to use.  What can I do? Any suggestions.
Thanks!

I have updated without problems to the version 5.1.889 in my W7-64bits, but some portable programs that Avast says that they are free of virus, they do not work and I have verified that only they work if I uninstall Avast

What are their app names? Are they executed from USB, right? What's your OS (32-bit or 64-bit)?

My OS y Windows 7 64 bits and an application that fails is poweriso portable. I have the original program installed in another computer without problems; I made it portable to be able to use it in an USB in other computers but since I update it does not work (if i uninstall Avast and I install another antivirus it works fine).
Later I have copied the files of portable Poweriso to the hard disk .... and it does not also work (before updating Avas it was working perfectly)

I have rated and recommended Avast to people for a long time, but for me and my family this update was not a good one.

Took the plunge with a 32-bit machine (Toshiba) that dual boots to win7 ultimate and XP SP3. The win7 boot has the same application stack pretty much as my desktop, so running threatfire and so on also. Both boots were fine with the 5.1.889 version.

So 3 64-bit machines in a heap with 5.1.889 and 32-bit seeming to be ok for me. So for me it's just the 64-bit ones that appear to have the problem. It's a big problem for them though so until we get another release I will stay ay 5.0.677 for them.
