Behemoth Flash Player for Real?
« on: June 09, 2012, 06:02:04 PM »
Okay, the current version of Flash Player that I have, which was the latest up until today, is 11.2.202.235.
Between the IE & Non-IE versions, that is 3.93 and 3.94 MegaBytes for a total of 7.87 MegaBytes.
Before that, as far as I recall, the previous versions had a footprint pretty much in the same range.

Then came the latest Flash Player Update today --- 11.3.300.257.
Between the IE & Non-IE versions that is now a Behemoth 8.80 and 9.37 MegaBytes for a Paul Bunyan Albatross total of 18.17 MegaBytes!
That is a total increase of 10.3 MegaBytes from the previous version!

What the --- ???  Is this correct?  Or is there somehow something wrong?
I saw them at FileHippo, which is where I always download Flash Player from.
I haven't installed them yet.  I'm trying to confirm that these latest Jupiter-sized Flash Player versions are for real.

If you open the settings manager in the new flashplayer you'll see under the advanced tab a number of new features.

Mine also says in programs and features that the size is 6mb but im on 64bit system so the 32 and 64 bit flash are included.

I did see the changelog in FileHippo mentioning new features, but it still seemed rather much of an increase in footprint.
I had my doubts and was hoping it'd turn out there was somehow a mistake and those huge versions would be recalled and made right.

But, I guess I'll just have to break down and install those 2 Woolly Mammoths.  :o

1. They're bigger now because of FP sandboxing, etc... ;)
2. Yep.

For this size of a footprint, I figured they would have included an Anti-Virus, Photoshop and an Office Suite.  ;D

Well I happened to have some old ones on my flash drive which were a little over 4MB each, but they were specifically 32bit versions for both firefox and IE.

The ones I have downloaded are 9MB (IE one) and 9.5MB (firefox one), now these don't specifically state they are 32bit or not, so my guess is that they may have incorporated 32/64bit into one file. This could account for the very large jump from just over 4MB each to over 9MB each.

It might make sense to do that as many would probably download the wrong version, unfortunately not much fun for those stuck on dial-up.

True. Earlier versions were provided for 32/64 bit, reducing the size of the installer...

Since the only browser I use anymore is Chrome, I have uninstalled all versions of flash player and only use the flash player that is integrated into Chrome.
It updates when Chrome updates. (as long as there is an update available)

Well, nice. But it won't update the Flash version needed for the avast stats. ;)
