Title: Avast 6.0's WebRep
Post by: Rafatxo on March 01, 2011, 08:03:58 PM
Hello!!
I have had a message to update to Avast's last version. I updated on my two computers (one with XP, and the other with Vista). I think in both of them I did the update well.
However, in XP I do not see the WebRep, that appears on Vista. In Vista, it is enough to type something on Google, and then every page that appears has WebRep's green symbol on its right, next to the magnifying glass. However, in XP I have seen the Add-ons installed, and it says that it is on. And in C: , I have seen that it is installed, too. However, in "Tools bar", it does not appear, as it does in Vista. Browser is Internet Explorer 8 in both computers. What can I do?

WebRep used to work grat before the server wreck. After that it's a complete mess for me.
Some pages in Google don't even have a grey icon, most of pages aren't rated even though they used to be, my blog was rated and yet it's still saying that it has no ratings.
Vlk was mentioning cached results but i don't think cache lasts for 3 days or more...

If you use Firefox 4.0 beta, I don't recall about 3.6x, you can set how much cache it retains.

I am currently using 37.5 MB.

You can set the maximum amount of cache that Firefox will retain by going Tools------Options---Advanced------Network

As far as I know Google retains cached pages for a very long time

Probably just because it's being forwarded by dot.tk. Some are stupid and just block everything with .tk in the end...

This may or may be relative to the problem.   Sorry if it is not :)

When I went to dot.tk/en/ Firefox gave me the following message.

"Firefox prevented this page from automatically redirecting to another webpage"

Are you using IE?
Go to Tools > Manage Add-ons and ensure that webrep is (a) listed and (b) enabled. That should be enough. You might also try to right click on the toolbar and select "avast! WebRep" from the list of available toolbars.

I suggest you do a "repair" installation of Avast 6 via Control Panel -> Software -> Avast. Select "Repair". Let it do until finished. Reboot.

I think "Add or remove programs" in XP does not have that option. The "Repair" option.

Of course it does, double click on avast in remove program's and once you get the popup scroll down and repair will be there.

In Vista I have seen in "Add/Remove programs", that option "Change or repair". I prefer to do that , instead of desinstalling Avast and installing it back again.
I would not want to install, because I would have to register again and put a key to the program.

That's also present in XP. Just scroll down the list in the installer.

Well, it does that option. I have chosen "Repair" from the options, and then I have rebooted the computer. But nothing. When I open Google, and type something in the little box, results appear.
But it does not appear anything green next to the magnifying glasses of the results pages.

Well, I will state my issue in another way?? Does anyone have XP with Avast 6.0?? How is its appearance?? How many tools do you have in menu "See"--"Tools bars"? I only have "Menus bar", "Favourites bar",
"Commands bar" and "State bar".

Well if you look at my signature you will see that I have XP Pro and avast 6.0 and whilst I no longer have the webrep installed on IE8 after testing it worked (which it did) I removed it as I don't use IE as my primary browser.

In your search results, whilst it might not show green bars it should show at least grey bars.

For this I installed it from the avastUI, Additional Protection, WebRep and that succeeded. If it doesn't and you don't see the avast! WebRep listed in the toolbars (see image1) it isn't installed.

Try the above to install it from within the avastUI - If that doesn't work check and ensure that the option to have the Web Reputation plugin checked. Same drill as for Repair but this time you are looking for Change, add remove programs, avast, Change/Remove, from the next window select Change, and ensure the Web Reputation plugin is checked (see image2), if not check it, clock Next and OK your way out.

Well, I have done what you has said to me, and nothing happens. The Web Reputation plugin is checked, the WeBRep appears checked in "Additional protection" within Avast interface. In this module within Avast interface appear Internet Explorer checked and Mozilla unchecked. In "notification area" of XP or "Tasks bar", Tools bars appear. Avast WebRep appears among them, but I have not been able to check it or tick it. The others, yes.
In "Manage Add-ons", Avast WebRep also appears twice, and seeing the details they match with those of Vista.

I don't know why the avast! WebRep is listed in the taskbar list of toolbars as it is never going to displayed there. Even if it were it couldn't do anything as the WebRep is hooked to the browser and indirectly to the sites.

I don't get the WebRep in the Toolbars list of the taskbar in XP Pro, but that is because I have the IE webrep uninstalled as I don't use IE as my default browser.

So what you are seeing here is classic, because IE is heavily integrated into the OS it is displaying this IE toolbar element, weird. If you unchecked/uninstall the webrep for IE in the Addirional Protection, WebRep section, you too wouldn't see the webrep listed in the taskbar toolbars list.

OK.
But, then I wouldn't see it anywhere, is it?

The fact that it isn't in the taskbar list doesn't stop it working/being in firefox. What that is showing is just how embedded IE is in your OS and that is what I hate about IE.

Yeah indeed. Should be possible for avast guys to prevent it from displaying there though, I just can't find the proper developer documentation ATM.

Well, I have tried everything. I have uninstalled Avast plugin WebRep from Avast's interface (window), and then I have installed it back again, over and over, but nothing happens.
Couldn't it be that I should change some options in IE Tools menu? I don't know Smart Screen Filter, or Security Zone, and then "Places".??

e.g. remove the webrep completely, remove it from the toolbars list in the taskbar or what.

Trying to find out why WebRep doesn't go.
The ultimate solution would be to uninstall Avast antivirus, and install it again to have WebRep going on. But, as I have examined everything (Manage add-ons, see C folder, see Avast interface(window)),run a repair of the program... and everything is alright, I want to know, as I said before, if there has something to do with IE Settings (InPrivate Filter, SmartScreen Filter, and so on).

Doesn't go where ?

A repair won't work if the webrep isn't installed as it only deals with installed components.

You are talking to an IE philistine as I avoid it like the plague, so I can't help with any IE settings.

My Avast 6 Free is not able to recognize installed Firefox at WEBREP setting tab ( Vista 64 Home Premium SP2 ).
Even after FF reinstalation and checked option to detect newly installed browser it still claims FF is not installed.

having installed Avast 6 on my XP Pro box, all went well until I checked my installation of IE7 and Firefox, both had an extra icon - webrep. Now no matter what I do, it won't go away.

I just do not want it there or operating, goto google and this box of 'rate this' pops up.

So come on, where is the remore webrep option please before I jump ship and find a more user friendly AV that doesn't put a non AV icon into any browser.

Thanks from a most annoyed Webmaster.

thats true, but its becoming more and more apparent that the backend infrastructure of WebRep was not ready for public use when v6 was released and it still isnt entirely ready it seems. perhaps it was slightly rushed to meet the release deadline

i completely understand the low amount of initial ratings, thats a given just by the nature of it, but i think they shuld have planned ahead better by considering how many users they have and making sure they can support all of them instead of interrupting service along the way to add upgrades, etc

Look craigb.............Im just saying this version of avast was completely rushed and you fail to see it. You defend avast like comodo members and melih defend comodo. You have to know all software fails but there is always room for improvements. *You telling the users to move on to another product* Is completely UN-professional. If avast told every one of there users to switch software if they encounter a problem how many avast users would there be? Not to many...

Thank you firzen771 for acknowledging the obvious. ;)

Well i dont think this version was rushed as avast has released it in the same manner as every other version and everyone was told about webrep and that there will be alot of improvements taking place on it so that is why i mentioned having patience, maybe it will be fixed soon and maybe it wont but i dont see the need to jump from one post to the next complaining about the same thing especially when the webrep doesn't really affect anything. I also dont go telling the user's to move on, only you! as you seem like a constant whinger and are probably never happy no matter what and my statment's to you are in no relation to the avast company as im a private user just like everyone else here.

Hm,

I am a big fun of Avast since Avast32, to which I migrated from AVG.

I agree every software has some users complaining all the time. So does it have rather overreactive defenders.
I think some of Derry's points in this topic are legitimate objections, and with some craigb's points I agree.

Webrep modul is questionable.
I am not commenting its functionality, not able to install it yet, wainting for official update.
I am not talking about building database, it is obvious.
But if standard instalation of Firefox makes him troubles to detect it, and if in other Windows instance it did not detect even Internet Explorer...
It seems funny. But not big deal for me.  It is fixed in incoming version and will be hopefully constantly improved.

Avast 6 as a whole is fine to me, or seems not to be rushed according to his stability and overall functionality.
But considering WEBREP is one of main features distinguishing it from Avast 5.1.......

It's unstable at this point, you might as well uninstall the WebRep, and get mcfee siteadvisor; that's just my opinion  ;)

And deal with ratings that are possibly 6 months or more out of date, in the PC security world where threats change by the day, sometimes by the hour?

Pass, sorry, but I would rather replace WebRep with nothing

LOL.  That's if you actually believe that the site advisor accounts for anything.  It could have 100+ updates a day, if it is as worthless as it's accompanied A/V, there's no sense in actually using or believing it.  Case in point:  I have a computer in my home right now that's been infected by viruses 3 times in the last 2 months, all while having McAfee installed.  Finally got the ok from the unsuspecting client to install Avast instead because OBVIOUSLY mcafee wasn't working as well as it should have been.

Have fun with your site advisor.

well I got a promo of 1 year free from siteadvisor plus and I never have an issues with it....is free why not  ;D. Beside siteadvior is base on people rating is the samething with like Avast 6.0's WebRep. The important things is the firewall and the antivirus + antispyware preventing from get into your compuuter, and the user habit of searching doing with their computer.

Just like most users of site advisor. Comes free with their ISP, computer, what-have-you.

Either way, it's all the same, just like WOT, Avast WebRep, and your "siteadvisor"...

It's nice and all, but the big problem still remains.  They're all USER based claims, which means users can fudge the results.  It can't and will not ever be replaced by and actual scan by a reputable A/V product.

Sure, it's nice to know that if 500 people visited a site and 485 of them reported the site as being a "bad" site, you might think that the site wasn't good.  It really remains to be seen though if the site is actually infected or is hosting bad information or not, or if it just has a bad reputation because a bunch of retards visited the site and didn't know what they were doing.

Anyway, these technologies are nice, and I welcome the addition of webrep to the avast family of products and wish it well.  I however, won't believe a darn thing that any company or software says (avast included) until I look at the code myself.

Again, enjoy your "site advisor" and believe what you want.

I had SiteAdvisor once and promptly removed it as it is worse than WOT.
I have even seen SiteAdvisor rate sites with known malware as safe! ::)

My Avast 6 Free is not able to recognize installed Firefox at WEBREP setting tab ( Vista 64 Home Premium SP2 ).
Even after FF reinstalation and checked option to detect newly installed browser it still claims FF is not installed.
( "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" )
Well, I do not want to change navigator. I do not want to put Mozilla.
So, will I have to uninstall Avast 6.0 and install it again??

What do you call "FF"? In "FF" reinstalation and "claims FF is not installed"? (Is it Firefox?)

To 1st Q: Your goal seems unclear to me, so unsure what to answer.
To 2nd Q: If it was not clear from context, I would explain it. :) I wonder what else alternative can come to mind. FF(Firefox) is almost as common abbreviation as IE(Internet Explorer).

¡Hello again!
Well, I forgot to say one thing. In Vista computer, apart from having WebRep , I had an Avast icon in the desktop. In Vista computer I have a Sidebar, and some gadgets (clock, calendar...) I can add or delete gadgets as I want. So, I had this Rightside Icon, for Sidebar I have placed on the right. Then, on starting my Vista computer, this icon used to appear inside Sidebar. Then, I deleted it . But in XP computer I haven't any Sidebars , neither any Avast icons have appeared.

Yes, that is normal. No sidebar -> no gadget in XP.

Well, at last I have managed to see WebRep's tool bar.
The problem was with "WinXP Manager". I have had to change some settings, related to Network (IE). Toolbars, BHOs, and so on. I had ticked the option to have Internet in Secure Mode (no third parties, or something like that). Then, I have had to untick this option. In BHOs, I could see that WebRep was there, and it said it was well . After changing IE properties and reboot the computer, the Avast WebRep toolbar has appeared. I also allowed Avast program to run within "Allowed programs" in Windows Firewall. Well, the thing is that I have WebRep now in XP.
