Get it (if you don't already have downloaded it) and use it. It won't harm your system, only cleans up a few leftovers the uninstall (add/remove programs in the control panel) of NAV didn't deleted.

Sorry, but I never told you to uninstall Avast. :-\
I told you to remove NAV (NORTON!) completely *sigh*

Please read this thread again... And take your time.

browsing the the web site and came across the FAQs

Q: I have installed avast! 4 Home and everytime I try to open it, I get an "unknown error message", "Application cannot load skin. Function usiGetSkin Failed". How do I fix this?

A:

   1. Select START -> RUN...
   2. Enter the following command:
          * If you have Windows NT or 2000:
            C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
          * If you have Windows 95, 98 or ME:
            C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
          * If you have Windows XP:
            C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
   3. Press OK (or Enter).
   4. A message saying that the file was successfully registered should appear.

this did not work for me a window popped up saying :

RegSvr32
DllRegisterserver in ACTSKIN4.OCX failed.
Return Code was :  0x80020009

Can you see if your problem could be corrected by setting the storage method in the Avast ini file?

Find the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\avast4.ini
Open it and scroll down until you see the ODBC line usually under the heading [Common].  Change the Database=ODBC to read Database=XML

Can you post the results?

No... don't mess anything...
Just open (click) the file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\avast4.ini
Search for the [Common] section (usually the second section of the file)
Found the value
Database=ODBC
and change to
Database=XML

Or, download 'Control' in my signature and change the storage method of avast (it's the same, i.e., you're doing manually what the downloaded program will do automatically).

Sure, it's a zip file with only one executable (avast_external_control.exe) inside.
Extract and run the .exe file.
Choose the option highlighted and change it automatically from ODBC to XML.
