Just right click on the "defs" folder and select "create a shortcut".

I'm still not getting updates. This happens on several computers, not just one. Also, on different places, not only in my home.
Why doesn't someone from the avast team even say something about this????
I think it's serious!!!

SOMEONE PLEASE FIX THIS!!!!!!!!

What OS?
Any other security software?
If uninstalled how was it removed?

I don't need to know your exact location, but what country do you live in?

On my PC I have malwarebytes and super antispyware, but not resident.
Win 7 x64. Issue also presents on win 7 x86.
But it doesn't matter, this issue presents itself on brand new machines, with freshly installed OS and Fresh installation of avast.
The DAMN server replies "There isn't newer VPS version" even if my VPS is a week old.
If you have an older version of avast (e.g. 7), it works fine.
If you have avast 9 and
a)a VPS older than 140421-1, then avast will update, but only to version 140421-1, not to the current version.
b)VPS 140421-1, avast won't update, says it's up to date, which it obviously isn't.
c) you use the offline updater to update to a version newer than 140421-1, then avast "updates" to the same version every time you turn on or reboot the PC or on schedule.
d) you get stream updates, but not regular ones.

I live in Chile (south america, in case you don't know).

It's driving me insane.
About 12 days ago we experinced this exact same issue, identical problems. Only after the avast team requested my update.log file the problem was solved.

Edit: now EVERY TIME I reboot, avast "updates" to the same version it already has, pop up and sound notification.
If avast thinks (whether mistakenly) the VPS is already up to date, should there be no pop-up notifications, which should appear only if the VPS has just been updated automatically?

This may sound rhetorical but have you tried a clean install?
If not...

Download and save the avast uninstall tool.
Download and save RejZor's clean-up tool.
Download and save your choice...
Avast Free
Avast Pro
Avast Internet Security
Avast Premier

Run the avast uninstall utility from above. You will be directed to reboot into safe mode...click "yes".
Reboot.
Run RejZor's clean-up tool.
Reboot.
Install choice from above.
Reboot and either register or insert license.

You may want to try this on one machine. If it works try on the others.
I'm wondering if there is something else going on like some low level drivers left over from a previous install.

<SOLVED> I had the exact same problem as my Avast program was not updating. I did have silent gaming mode on and program update set to manual. Here's what solved my update problem:

1) (right click taskbar icon) avast! shields control > Disable permanently > Yes (pop-up window)
2) (right click taskbar icon) Open avast! user interface > (Sprocket icon) > General > avast! Settings > Account Status > Disconnect > OK (bottom) > Log Out
3) (right click taskbar icon) avast! shields control > (Home icon) > resolve all >
4) (right click taskbar icon) Open avast! user interface > (Sprocket icon) > General > Update > Program > "Program" section > Update (Click it) > OK
5) (right click taskbar icon) Open avast! user interface > (Sprocket icon) > General > avast! Settings > Account Status > Connect > (Enter registered email address + password) > OK

It updated right away without having to uninstall or restarting PC!

Using the Silent Gaming Mode function is a known bug that prevents updates.
Program update is set too ask by default.

I didn't have silent mode enabled.
I didn't unisntall/reinstall/repair or anything like that.
This happened even on brand new pcs, with fresh OS and fresh avast.
It happened to friends' PCs too, not only to me.

Today, it started working just fine again, magically.
Somebody fixed something!!!!!!
Well, thanks to whoever fixed it.

You are the one that is complaining, we are only trying to help in the best way we can.
avast is a free product, I don't think we are entitled to complain even if it is not working properly.
And we should not complain against people who aim to help, even if their "help" is of no help.

Sorry dude but not all Avast problems are not free. I will complain all I want to and this problem continues I will be using Kaspersky next/
