Disable all settings in the Virus and Protection settings (first pic) then scoll to the bottom to Change Notification settings and disable Windows Defender Anti-virus settings (second pic).

Double check through Taskmanager - Startup that Defender is disabled.

Mate, I can't get past disabling real time protection. Once i disable that, it automatically turns back on. I open task manager and under the startup it shows that windows defender is status is enabled. Even disabling windows defender from task manager and turning off the real time protection via the windows defender security center it automatically turns back on.

Is this a bug from microsoft?
Do you have a third party AV installed? if not then you wont be able to disable.

After upgrading to Creators update I had to search for the control panel.  Why isn't it in the start menu?  I also noticed that when I go to windows updates it doesn't show the update history.  I wish now that I hadn't upgraded.
As with all Win 10 and Win 8 versions you can open the Start tab and start typing to search, type...control panel and before your eyes it will appear :) right click will give you an option to pin to start.

You wont see update history until there have been some updates, the link is in the same place as before just below Check for updates.

I only have Avast free installed. Before that I had Mcafee livesafe pre-installed with my laptop. I then uninstalled it and used the MCPR tool to remove competely. After that I installed Avast Free

I always disable or remove my security software before updating to new systems so all I can suggest is a clean install of Avast and Windows Defender should then re-recognise Avast being installed and disable itself.

@CraigB: It worked mate. I did a clean installation i.e. uninstalled Avast via add/remove and used the avast uninstall utility. I then had to manually disable windows defender settings from the task manager and from the windows defender security center and after that re-install Avast. I came across few issue/concern. Upon installing Avast it opened up the Avast GUI and it said finishing avast installation 0%-99% (See attachement avastgui.jpg). It seems to get stuck on 99%, but when i closed Avast and re-opened Avast the percentage was gone so i assumed it finished the installation. After that I restarted my laptop manually. After that I opened up the Avast GUI again and went to the subscription tab to enter my email address so I can register it, but I didn't see the register form but this one appeared (see attachment subscription.jpg). In this new version don't we have to type our email address anymore?

Very good, any further issues then had better start a separate topic.

So should I be worried about those two things (screenshot) that I posted. Is the 1st screenshot a known bug?

Just a point about screenshots, it would be helpful if you don't post a full screen screenshot as it doesn't fit within the forum topic and requires a lot of scrolling to get to the information. A cropped shot showing only the relevant information (the avast UI in this case) makes it easier.

Oh okay. Back to my question about the first screenshot is it a reported bug for the Avast GUI that it gets stuck on 99% and when the user closes the gui and opens up again it goes away?

I honestly don't know (or I would probably have answered it) if this, was/is a bug related to a scan getting to 99% (and or other value) and then reporting scan cancelled. That is a known bug awaiting being squashed, if your issue doesn't also state scanned cancelled then I don't think it is the same, but it could well be a bug.
