Interesting 47 minute video:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9050474362583451279&hl=en

This nicely explains the expanding balloon that I talked about.
They keep blowing it up and up till it finally busts......

I'm not sure what "Babylon the great" has to do with the current situation other than that human nature proves itself susceptible to perpetually repeating its mistakes over and again despite the warnings (or - rarely - the encouragement) of the accepted religion "du jour".

Of course the large banks and insurance companies will not be allowed to crash and burn - that is not at all in the interests of the corporate world that still controls the major economies of the globe. Most certainly here in the US they completely dominate the national legislature and the media.

I have some hope that my vote for the senator from Illinois may, with a majority of my fellow citizens, make a slight difference to improve our lot.  I do not have the slightest doubt that very real change (as it always does) would happen if the banks and insurance companies were allowed to fail as suggested.  The resulting mass unemployment, mass deprivation and poverty would lead to a different structure.  It may even be a better one but let's not underestimate the pain and suffering that its birth would engender.

The last time we went through such a cycle it took a global war to usher in the eventual real changes.

Danien,
The global solution is to let it crash and start a new..... :'(

As I've pointed out before, the problem is that the people responsible for the reckless loans have passed the risk on to the rest of the world. The US cannot afford to let the rest of the world take the consequences of the failure of these loans because of its huge national debt- it needs credit and it's not going to get credit if it tells the rest of the world to go hang.

To follow on from the comments of FreewheelinFrank ,

the really really scary scenario is if the "rest of the world" for which read China, Japan and the oil rich kingdoms of the Middle East stop loaning to the US or worse yet want their money back.  The Iraq and Afghan wars have been largely financed by huge borrowing from the these sources rather than by increasing taxes here in the US (indeed there have been tax cuts here).  US military spending has doubled since the start of the current administration - the money has come from increasing the national debt rather than asking us to pay for it as we go.

If (Heaven forbid) the international community loses faith in US Treasury bonds as a reliable investment (as they have lost faith in just about every other available piece of paper) then we all might as well start looking for candles and learning survival techniques to see us through the next few years.

Lets see, 47 minute video @ 1min = xMBs * 47 = yMBs * dial-up @ 3.5-4.0 mins per MB = "oh my god it isn't that interesting" ;D

I think it's time we all pitch in and unchain David from his dial-up.  ;D ;D ;D

Cannot understand why DavidR did not choose the alternative of mobile Internet, stick in the modem USB that come free and pay per month for fa...ast(er) Internet connection, 21% of UK residents have this,

I can:
a) with few exceptions, normal mobile communications aren't great in my area. I guess I'm not in the 21% ;D
b) mobile broadband (3G) communications are even worse.
c) assuming I could get a reasonable connection, cost (I don't need a load ;D I just hate being ripped off) high monthly charge and once they see how long I would be on-line etc. it isn't unlimited connection/downloads, etc.
So you would be likely to have to pay an even higher sum than the monthly charge.
