Title: ** INTRODUCING: New Official Avast Program Update 6.0.1125 **
Post by: Vlk on May 10, 2011, 06:42:35 PM
Hi,

I'm glad to announce the general availability of a new avast! program update, version 6.0.1125.

How to get it

Use the in-product updater, or download the setup program from the following locations:

Free AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe
Pro AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe
IS: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe

What's new
Most notable improvements include:
- solved a problem in aswSP.sys that could lead to a system crash
- improved tolerance for corrupted installations
- when updating from a previous version of avast Pro/IS, SafeZone is now automatically added
- solved a compatibility problem with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro
- improved cleaning of rootkits
- fixes in Chrome WebRep plugin
- Behavior Shield: improved compatibility with other applications
- improvements in the CommunityIQ submission system
- various performance and compatibility improvements

Note: If you have any problems with this new version, please do NOT post to this thread; start a new topic instead. Ideally one topic per issue.

Thanks much
Vlk

PS Many thanks to everyone who helped testing the pre-release builds.

well it happened twice, and then not again. The first like the second time was when I wanted to close the browser from the browser window. Sounds more like a Chromium issue... I guess.

@vlk btw this chromium version is seriously outdated. I guess you never intended to follow the actual Chromium build life cycle but well, Chrome stable is on version 11 now and the chromium version used in the SZ is V9...

edit: can you update it without having to update the program?

not sure to what it's related, because I did three things until I realized that Windows indexing service stopped working:

1 updated Avast to latest version
2 re-installed the behavior shield
3 updated Windows

the service refused to restart manually but magically clicking just on "rebuild" from the indexing UI did the job. Event viewer doesn't tell much except that requests timed out when I tried to restart the index service etc...

edit: just found that "The Windows Modules Installer service terminated with the following error:
%%16405"

forget it, a hundred percent not avast related, I find error entries about the index long before I upgraded Avast and re-installed the BS.

Hi!

Downloaded.

I had uninstalled Avast free previous version because I had fed up with the always hardly working webrep addon. I use Firefox 4.0.1 stable version. So I changed and tried NOD 5 beta antivirus software.

Now, I uninstalled NOD 5 beta and made a clean install of this version of Avast free.

Everything went fine, and what's more I'm really happy that webrep under Fox4 working well. Fast and working when I use with google. Nice! Very nice! I hope this time this will be a constant condition.

Great work! The other components also work well, as always.

Thanks,
but with the previous version of avast I had no problems with my Outlook 2007 had, send and receive by e-mail.
Only with this version I have problems and so it is already in here;)
So I had to scan for incoming email (POP3, IMAP4) and outgoing (SMTP) to examine messages in the avast program off the hook and take off.

we got the feedback from the German forums and our customers that the problems with the aswSP.sys BSODs disappeared with the latest release. Also the upgrade process worked smoothly. For German users we provide localized release notes, just check the link from my signature.

Noticed that after installing this version on Windows XP SP3 that windows media player is yet again back to that horrible red colour. Will have to look up which files need to be registered in windows registry again.

Edit.

Did this and back to normal again---

Start, run, then paste in the following pressing OK after each line

regsvr32 jscript.dll

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

before starting silly accusations, you should get your pre-information done right...

If you would have checked the domain name registration, you would have noticed that it belongs to a authorized GOLD reseller of avast! and that AVADAS is a legitimate German company, registered by the same reseller. The forum is a German community, which is being sponsored by the reseller. AFAIK the biggest community for avast! following after the original forum here. Check http://forum.avast.de. Next time do your research (if there have been a research at all) more properly.

Actually, my bootups seem to be taking longer than before and things , especially browsers, are a lot more sluggish at first. I did disable the indexing service though because I read that it would speed up XP. Maybe the opposite has occurred.

If you execute WMP, you should get a response from Script Shield to show it is actually functioning.  Then the question is for what other scripted applications and browsers under what conditions (OS etc) does it also function?-I use Opera and have never seen or heard of it working there.  Don't know anything definite about Chrome, FF, IE; haven't heard from other users (or Vlk) lately about how much has currently been implemented for Script Shield.  Certainly seems worthy of you starting a separate thread, though.  :)

Looks like a server down.  Go to main settings page, and under "basic" uncheck "show remote content".  Under "Community" uncheck the two community boxes at the bottom.

it worked dude! kudos!

but my only concern is that, will it be fixed any time soon if i'll "check" back again the two unchecked items?

yeah, the servers should be up shortly.  I expect with the huge response to the new release things are a bit hectic.  150 million users is sure a lot.  But try turning them back on in a day or two, and if they drop out occasionally, don't be too worried-they are just to help you get to the other sites more conveniently, in spite of the perhaps dire message.  :)

Hi Avast, I downloaded my three computers with the new Avast Internet Security version. They all work fine, but on my one computer I get a message on the main page at the bottom next to Maintenance that says in Bold print: 404-Not Found. It says it twice. Avast is working fine on this computer, but can you tell me what that message is. Thanks, Avast user for 4 years running.

Nothing to do with the avast version, just the network shield doing its job (should have been your firewall ?). If you want to follow this up further then create your own new topic in the http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0 forum, 'New Topic' button.

I think when we approach to 1125 and more then the v6 version become a success for sure.

Good job avast! i alway know that you could success. Too bad that your internet security is not trial install in every pc that is sold and your product sold on market. I just upgraded AVAST 6.0.1091 to AVAST 6.0.1125 and WMP11 became red again, I had to repeat the process explained in the thread http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=72405.msg644825#msg644825 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=72405.msg644825#msg644825) as I told in the post you can read in this link.

Maybe AVAST deletes the both entries ? Maybe could you fix it to avoid to repeat the process at each upgrade, please ? Thank you very much in anticipation :)

If it did 'unregister' these dlls then this problem would be across the whole avast user-base with WMP11 and XP (don't recall seeing it on other OSes or WMP versions) and that clearly isn't the case.

So there is more to this than that, system settings, applications installed, .etc and in combination with avast has this effect. But trying to pin it down isn't easy as avast were asking for someone to remote access and see if they can pin down something they can't replicate.

Avast is not doing it on it's own or it would do it to everybody running WMP 11 on XP. It only does it to certain people and it has to be a result of something in the overall setup common to only those people that is at the root of the problem.

Try a system reboot first,

Sometimes it can take up to two reboots for Avast to "kick in" properly after a program update.

If that does not work, try a Repair of Avast. Go To Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs-Click on Avast-Click on Remove-Click on Repair.  Follow the prompts.

If THAT does not work, get a fresh download of Avast from www.avast.com and download it to your desktop or your downloads folder if you have one. (Don't install it just yet.)  Also download the Avast Uninstall Utility here:

http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Follow the instructions at the URL above.  After doing that, go back to where you saved your fresh download of Avast 6 from the website and install it.  Fill out the Registration form in the Maintenance Tab and you should be done.

I understand, fully that web rep is having problems. But it's been months that this issue has not been fixed. It's obviously a big issue considering it's not being fixed. I understand that it's not a *big part of security in avast*! But why are we not seeing improvements into the web rep. Why have somthing released when it is not working for the majority of users? ??? ??? As an avast user i would like a time frame on when it will be fixed because it's simply been months since the avast web rep has even worked for me and the majority of avast users.

Agreed. Yes, this is an annoying problem which comes back time to time. Maybe there are some more serious bugs in Avast or, I don't know. But that's true, that WebRep is very unstable or the server(s) are unreliable...

But now hopefully WebRep working well, on my notebook with Fox4.0.1

System restore can have unforeseen consequences. I suggest that you do a clean reinstall.

- Download the latest version of avast, 6.0.1125 http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download (http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).

I registered here at Avast forums just to say that you've got a real winner in this new Avast 6.0.1125. It functions great. Congratulations.

I hadn't tried Avast since version 4.8 (yes, a long time ago). It was good then but man the difference now is surprising. The interface looks great...very light on system resources without sacrificing effectiveness...truly a great antivirus. I'm going to start pushing Avast to everyone.

Again, congratulations.

After upgrading each of my PCs running AIS I encountered a problem where the boot process appeared to stall. 2 machines running XP Pro were affected. Initially I thought that there was a problem with the MBR on those two boxes but I was able to boot into the safe mode on both without any problems. While in the safe mode, I completed a repair of the Avast install. The problem was solved.

I find it stupidly amazing that Avast can't create an update process that doesn't require rebooting the whole PC.  Is it really that difficult to have a separate update process that stops the service, updates the code and then starts the service?

General (i.e not-related-to avast!-in-particular) answer.
An update that requires changes to or removal of a running system-dependent windows file or process must be done while that process is inactive. This is generally considered preferable to a stop error. ;D

The service? No.
The drivers and system-wide hooks, injected into many/all running processes throughout the system... yes.

Hi!

I have just installed Firefox Beta 5.0.2 release. Avast WebRep disabled by defaults. But working well, just have to use Addon Compatibility Reporter and enable it.

But, would be great to think about that cause Fx5 will land soon.

Yes, in June.
But, no need to worry about the beta version, imo.

Agreed, avast shouldn't go chasing all beta developments, but concentrate on the avast product in relation to regular released applications (I thing that is a big enough task).

If an when my desktop returns from PC World and if they have actually wiped the hard drive and restored to factory settings, it looks like I will have to use another anti-virus on it, even though my laptop has had no issues with Avast.

The fact that the original post here mentions that the previous version caused crashes in some machines, could if PC World cotton on, make them say it was all caused by Avast and use that as an excuse to try and say that my service plan I have with them does not cover anything they do.  >:(

I've been away a while and now my IS screen says:

"A new version of the progran is available! Latest program version: 5.0.1125"

Does it in fact mean 6.0.1125 or is that just a coincidence of numbers?  If I choose the in-product update button will it update from version 5 and install the latest incarnation of version 6 automatically or do I need to uninstall 5 first?

Thanks

I know that this is an OT, but since other users are bringing up this topic...

It took 15 years to get to version 4.0.

Additional 5 years brought us to version 4.8.

Less than 18 months ago we were using version 4.8.

Version 5.0 was "current" for only 9 months.

Version 5.1 had a life of less than 3 months.

Less than 4 months ago we got the first 6.0 release.

There are users still having problems with the newer features of the current major version.

... And users are already asking for version 7.0 ?

I know that some tools are changing their major versions' numbers twice a year, but I don't think that a trusted security tool like Avast should do the same, unless...

Well, unless the current versions are not working so good and/or changing the major version number is a marketing-based decision.

Or maybe I'm too old :P.

As far I know, they do not follow this scheme. The higher the number of changes in code, the greater the number of the version. They're trying to upgrade the software in such way that in one year we'll have a new version. It's not marketing but a computer/code target as far I know.

I do believe you :) but as for myself I never pay any attention to the version number. Could be
6.0.13.25.0,they are only numbers. The most important is that Avast does a good job like now to protect my computer.

I'm not saying that "marketing" is indeed the reason. I have no real knowledge about the reasons. I'm just pointing out that in 15 years, Avast changed from 1.0 to 4.0 and 5 years to get from 4.0 to 4.8. I do NOT think that in 20 years Avast have changed LESS than in the last 18 months :).

Those are numbers. The real job is the important thing. In any case, it seems that some group of users have changed in the last 25 years :D, simply because in the first 20 years there were not so many questions about when the next major version number would be released, specially not after only 4 months of the latest major number upgrade.

Avast, please keep providing good security tools for millions of users, and keep improving. Whichever version number you want to use, it's fine with me :). I haven't asked before, and I never will.

Just because malware writer uses a new technique frequently, so avast changes itself to catch them simple. One can't stand on one version through out the year if he came to know that a new category of malware are on rise. avast changes it self to protect us. No matter how many new versions but every iteration protect us one step ahead.

      Hope you got my point

Thanks

??? After I reinstall my Compaq with windows XP3 (XP with service pack 3)
I tried to load AVAST and continue to get issues. I can uninstall AVAST and the issues go away.
what is conflicting with a fresh install of Windows XP and the Free version of AVAST?
Issue is if I left click on the screen I get an error...should have written down the message but I get the same message which requires me to click okay and stops me from using the start and add/remove programs until I disable avast...remove it and reboot.

Help!
I see other also get the loop also and end up reinstalling XP Pro Service Pack 3 too to get rid of avast but they could disable it, remove it to get around it but then what?
Would like it fixed...please!!!

Hi Tech,
It fails on DELL as well. For Compaq only installed an ethernet driver from a Compaq CD for the Compaq after XP Pro with Sevice pack 3 (has the Mirocoft Visual C++ 2008 x86 9.0.30729.4148 (all part of the XP install disk) later I added Microsoft office 2003.

Hope that helps,

I would do two things before installing Avast on a fresh install of Windows. Make sure all device drivers are loaded and working. Then do all Windows updates and make sure you install C++ 2008. After that, then install Avast and it should work perfectly.

I tend to agree with you.
Others will defend you shouldn't even connect the computer to get Windows Updates before installing the antivirus.
I've installed three computers last week and did what you've said, updated Windows before installing avast.
