Title: support.avast.com website
Post by: chocholo on February 23, 2007, 12:29:32 PM
I am glad to introduce you our new support portal running on support.avast.com (https://support.avast.com/eng) address. Portal will act as a knowledgebase for our products (which will supersede current FAQ section on our website) and as a ticketing system.

Website is currently in public testing stage, all your notes and suggestions are welcome in my mailbox (e-mail address is in my forum profile), in this thread or as a comment of this knowledgebase article (https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=68).

In addition to support issues, could this also be used as a portal to submit a newly found virus?

No, this system is not intended for samples submission.

Virus submissions will be handled by a different system (or a different back-end, at least) that is still under development.
It's not that this will not be implemented, it's just that it's not ready yet.

Hello I have a question to someone who may perhaps can help me please.
I have been getting a red flag stating that my avast is nearly over and is needing to be re registered.
But when I click on it it says that my avast is no longer running and that my computer is unprotected, yet yesterday while playing W.O.W. I heard in the background that avast has updated. Yet today it still says that it has expired. I sent 2 times to re register and have not gotten an answer back. Why? and what is going on, is their a copycat virus telling me to re register and preventing me from contacting you guys. I like avast very much and never ever had any problem until now. Please help me.
  Thank you for your time.

Complete the avast! 4 Home Registration (http://www.avast.com/eng/home-registration.php) form and you will receive an email from register @ avast.com (without the spaces) with your registration key.

Do you mean you do not receive the email back with the registration key?
Check if your ISP or your spam killer application aren't blocking the email from Alwil Software.

Hi again :
And yes I have completed the  Avast! 4 Home reg 3 times now and still no reply.
My Spam blocker is not blocking in my email I have that set to see who it is sending me anything soI can delete it if I don't know who it is, before I open it. As it is my Avast is still updating from time to time, yet right after it does it then sends up a red flag right afterwords. I wonder if I should uninstall it and reload it back on I did notice some avast files were sent to it's own virus chest after I Ran a scan on my hard drive.

It may be your ISP blocking as has happened in the past, check if they use an anti-spam filter that they aren't telling you about.

What is your ISP ?
Have you tried using a different email address with a different domain name ?
You could get a free Yahoo address and try again, this has worked for many in the past.

How do I hide the on access scanner message prompt screen?  It takes up nearly one quarter of my screen?
Title: Re: support.avast.com website
Post by: DavidR on August 05, 2007, 01:51:33 PM
A forum search for on access scanner message would likely return many hits as it is an often discussed topic.

This option, 'Show detailed info on performed actions' is off by default, so it would appear you have been tweaking avast without knowing the effect it will have. This function is also on the Web Shield and Internet Mail providers so you should also check those.

You can 'save' all files in the <avast>\Data\Chest folder.
Remember that the three ones sit on the 'System folder' of the Chest are clean and are there as a backup (dublicate) and avast did not 'move' the original files from the computer, just 'copy' them.

Make sure the avast plugin is not disabled into MS Outlook:

Outlook 2007 > Tools > Trust center > Add-inns > Manage Disabled items.
Outlook 2003 > Help > About > Disabled items.
Outlook 2002 > Help > About Microsoft Outlook > Disabled items.
Outlook 2000 > Tools menu > Options > Other > Advanced Options > Add-In Manager.

As reported a lot of times, the message "The provider is waiting on the subsystem to start" will be shown there until you open MS Outlook.
The plugin will be enabled automatically after that, i.e., if Outlook is running you'll have the 8 providers of the Pro version running.

How quickly the avast! ball spinns depends on the size of the file it's scanning. It also depends on what the amount of system
resources are available to avast!.
Remember, it's checking in the background.
Title: Re: support.avast.com website
Post by: igor on September 01, 2008, 10:14:48 PM
I don't think that the spinning speed has anything to do with scanning speed or size of the scanned file.
The icon spins when there's anything being scanned - but the spinning speed is constant all the time (I believe it's ruled by a counter - if there's any scan in progress, the icon is rotated by one "piece" every 0.2 second, for example (I just made this number up, don't know what's the exact value).

But yes, if the system is too loaded with the scan itself, it might not be able to redraw the icon quickly enough, so it looks like it doesn't turn smoothly.

This should be rather simple, but for the future you should create a 'new topic' for something unrelated to the Topic Title.

It doesn't matter if you have forgotten the email used, just enter the one you are using as your default one now.

There wasn't any password required as far as I'm aware on the four and a half years I have been using the home version.

Complete the avast! 4 Home Registration (http://www.avast.com/eng/home-registration.php) form and you will receive an email from register @ avast.com (without the spaces) with your registration key.

Also see, Insert Registration Key - Video (http://www.avast.com/files/tutorials/insert_key.htm).

We will need more information to be able to help you:
- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?  Did you have in the past?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?

<snip> i had Kaspersky on there but it had run out so i has to delete that which i did with difficulty.

If you didn't use the Windows Add Remove Programs to uninstall (not delete) then there are likely to be remnants of Kaspersky.

First try the windows add remove programs and see if there is an entry for Kaspersky and uninstall using that.

Second: Run this utility to remove all traces of Kaspersky from the registry:
http://www.ice-kav.com/downloads/util/KAV_Registry_Clean.zip (http://www.ice-kav.com/downloads/util/KAV_Registry_Clean.zip)
ICE is a US distributor for Kaspersky.

PommieBaz, I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

HI,
I am having problems downloading Avast pro into my new computer. I purchased the Pro edition in August 2008, the edition reference #225343215 1yr-08-24-08PRO-ED-192878
Reg-W20447828R1400A0710-XXXXXXXXX I believe when I ordered the Pro edition I was on COX.NET as tomsndbt@cox.net.
Can you please update me as to my anti-virus program with Avast and how I can get it reinstalled on my new computer. I have had no problems since I changed from AVG and another anti-virus suite, and as you can surmise I am so far happy with my experience using your program.
I also want to get my protection updated and activated so I may take advantage of your offer of a 25% discount which I (assume) covers renewing?
Thank you for your help and support.

First I would modify your post and either remove your email or obscure it to prevent it being harvested by some spambot, e.g. yourname (at) cox (dot) net, etc.

Where did you download it from ?
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-professional.html (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-professional.html), I would suggest you download the one from avast rather than the link to download.com.

What problems are you experiencing ?
Are you saving it to your HDD first or trying to download and run/install in one movement (not advised) ?
Are you using a download manager ?

When I log in, I get a blank page: http://support.avast.com/index.php
When I click the register link, I get a blank page: http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=core&_a=register

I would either like to issue a ticket, or have someone get in contact with me to sort out an installation issue of Avast Server Edition on an Exchange 2007 system...

Hello Charley,

I tried again: http://support.avast.com -> login -> blank screen
(Windows XP Pro SP3 with IE8. same for Firefox on that machine)
I used another machine: Windows 7 with IE8: -> blank screen

I have tried the same from another PC, on another internet connection (Windows Vista with IE7): blank page

Any idea ? I'm testing from 2 different internet connected networks, with 3 different machines...

Mario

Not blank here.
( Vista - Firefox and IE8 )

Are you sure your not running some kind of security program that's blocking
these sites?  Maybe malware is doing it ???

The people that appear to have problems only seem to experience it after trying to register/sign in, just browsing doesn't seem to be a problem.

Clearing cookies seems to resolve the problem so you can browse but once you try to register/login they experience problems.

Well, having set up an account and logged in, I'm able to browser the site, etc. without problem, using Firefox 3.0.9 so it is a mystery to me why for some it doesn't work.

ok,

I still can't from any of these PC's which do not have anything in common (home PC, work PC, othere internet line, other OS,...)
I can't even create another account to check whether it is account related... the register link also gives me a blank page...

Anyway - this is another problem.
I need to get in contact with the support team. How do I proceed without being able to open a ticket ?

Cheers,
Mario

A. Forum policy: avoid CAPS...

B. Read the instructions, download and burn (maybe from another computer), finally use one of this rescue CD's:
1. Avira (http://www.free-av.com/en/tools/12/avira_antivir_rescue_system.html)
2. Kaspersky (http://dnl-eu10.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/RescueDisk/)
3. BitDefender (http://download.bitdefender.com/rescue_cd/)
4. F-Secure (http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/07/26/free-f-secure-rescue-cd-300-to-clean-virus-from-unbootable-windows/)
5. Dr. Web (http://www.freedrweb.com/livecd/?lng=en)

C. Which is your Windows? 98, Me, XP, Vista?
Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

This removes the confusion of multiple issues in one thread, and makes it easier to help you.

When you do this add these things:

What was the previous AV?
How was it removed?

Dear avast! support team,

It's good to hear that your develop new system as a support system for avast! customer.
Anyway, is there any user account need to submit or open ticket if user got a problem with their products?
Or whether this support forum valid only for avast user only and not share to each others customer which never or do not know about avast product yet?

Please kindly advice

Thanks

Presumably you are talking about the Pro version. If so then you need to contact sales (at) avast (dot) com with information on your license purchase, rough date, email used, etc. and then they may be able to track down the details and send it again.

Are you sure you have the genuine Avast?
If you do, the uninstall utility linked by Marc57 will do the job, you may have to run it in safe mode.

Some users don't know to disable the self protection module. This will cause problems with uninstalling. Right click the blue ball, select "settings", then "troubleshooting", then disable the self protection module. It should uninstall normally. Wouldn not hurt at all to run the uninstall utility (in normal mode) following this.

If you don't mind my asking, why do you need to uninstall it?

I had to improvise. I grabbed my own graphics and used the old links. It still gives me credit for any referrals. ( I Hope. )
Example can be found here:
Freeware for the week ending 01-30-10 (http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/FreeWareCollectedFromTheWWW/FreeWare01-30-10.html)

This really should be in its own new topic in the avast! Free/Pro/Suite forum, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0) so as not to confuse this unrelated problem and we can get on it. Essentially you can install the latest avast 5 pro version on the new system and convert the old license for a new one you can use. You then need to remove the installation from the old system. More info on the new topic if required.

I have just registered another an account on support.avast.com and I was sent the email within seconds, so I don't know why you didn't.

Although some users have reported that mail from avast! does not arrive. This is usually because their ISP blocks mail from avast! without informing the user. But webmail works...

Try a free webmail account, I use Gmail and all mail from avast! gets in straight away, and not in spam...

Do as suggested earlier contact sales (at) avast (dot) com, if you have not received your email with license key, there is a high possibility your ISP is using an anti-spam filter and blocking it. That has been the most frequent cause of non-receipt of emails.

Why doesn't Avast have a bootable CD?
Title: Re: support.avast.com website
Post by: DavidR on April 05, 2010, 04:10:30 PM
It depends why you need a bootable CD, as avast has the boot-time scan where you can scan your system before windows is running. This is currently only available for 32 bit OS versions, 64bit OSes are hoped to be included in avast 5.1.

So it is possible that you don't need a bootable CD.

avast does have the Bart CD but that isn't a free product.

I was offline from the internet for a few days, and when I attempted to go back online today, I wasn't able to do so.  One of the troubleshooting suggestions was to do a system restore from a previous date when there was some significant activity done on my pc.  I reviewed the last date when this happened (a windows update that i downloaded a few days prior).  But the subsequent attempt to restore the system to that date was unsuccessful.  One of the suggestions was to disconnect my anti-virus program so that the system could do the restore.  But I can't seem to figure out how to temporarily disable my Avast! 4.8 Pro edition to do this restore.  I did a "How do I..." query on another computer, but the suggestions I got weren't applicable; (i.e no "Detail List" or other applicable functions on the the menu of my version of Avast!.  I also have a Problem Resolving message on my windows Control Panel Action Center, which says that "avast! 4.81169 [VPS 100419-1] is on, but is reporting it's status to Windows Security Center in a format that is no longer supported.  Use the program's automatic update feature, or contact the manufacturer for an updated version".
Does anybody have any suggestions?  I just want to be able to connect my pc back to the internet...thanks!

I had AVG on the laptop and nothing was found. I changed to Avast Pro 5 and it found 2 virus's. The first was  (Java:agent's [trj]). I did a boot scan and it cleaned that one. The next day I did a full scan and found ( win32:malware). Avast fixed this one also. But when I do a Full scan I only get to  52% then 71% then 68%. Each time the scan gets to above 52%,the farthest was 71% it just stops. It Say's it is scanning but after 2 hours nothing changed and I was still at 52%. Can anyone give advice on this problem. I have my Laptop and a Desktop that I also put Avast Pro on and have no issues. I just installed Avast on all my computers on April 20,2010. 2 laptops and 1 desktop. Also Mbam finds nothing in the full scan.

How did you get rid of AVG ?
Worth ensuring all remnants of AVG are gone - AVG8.x (or higher) Remover, download tool from here, http://www.avg.com/download-tools (http://www.avg.com/download-tools) there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

As strange as this might sound - What is your firewall ?

I can send a lot of FAQ's if it's a good idea... what do you think Chocholo?
That would be nice! My mailbox is widely open :)

I recently paid for a 2 year subscription to Avast  and keep getting messages my subscription has run out. ???

Presumably this is an avast 5 version, avast pro or avast Internet Security ?
Where did you purchase the license through ?

Have you entered the license in the program ?
If so check the system date, day/month/year and adjust as required.

akGinger1, where did you buy it?
The correct file is license.avastlic and not license.avast.

Honorio, it would be better you hide your email address and avoid spamming.

To both, better is open a NEW THREAD to your questions.

hi tomrefrag

what was the avast that you had installed?
avast! Free
avast! Pro
(or) avast! Internet Security

(or) did you still have avast 4.8 installed?

The problems that generates error 536870929 don't occur that often and sometimes is related to having more than one resident AV run on the system, or remnants of a previous that is still active even though the AV has been uninstalled by conventional method like Windows Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.

For this scenario, avast provides the uninstall utility, which can be run after conventional uninstall and is designed to remove any remaining troublesome remnants - find it here:  http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility  - choose which applies to yr system and run it in Safe Mode.

You could also firstly run a conventional uninstall using Revo Uninstaller - make sure you download Free option at the bottom of Freeware column - http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

or another option is to work through this site: Ultimate List of Uninstallers - there are guide to uninstall utility for both avast v4.8 and v5 - http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/

Use Ultimate List of Uninstallers to better remove remnants from any other AV that may have been previously installed.
Also you can use ccleaner to help clean up any crap still may be clogging the system -  http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim  - and defraggler can be helpful too for tidy up of files - dfraggler slim: http://www.piriform.com/defraggler/download/slim

And be best to begin yr own thread (and provide a link to it) rather than keep posting here where you are unlikely to draw much favorable response -

I just downloaded /paid for the Avast Internet Software....now my file refuses to open & my installation is incomplete! What next???:0(:0(
I suggest an installation from scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results.

Whilst this question is slightly off-topic, but as you mentioned the Forum's look getting a makeover, I would much rather you resolved this problem with session authentication and session timeout errors ?

These problems are a far greater concern to me and many other forum regulars (trying to help other avast users) than aesthetics.

Whilst there have been a couple of topics raised on this subject we haven't had any input from avast as to why this might be happening and more importantly how it can be resolved.

Man... you're doing a very BAD job with websites, servers, timeouts...
You can really do it a much better...
The browsing experience in avast forums is really degradated nowadays...
You can only say the opposite if you stay here for few seconds.
For us, users, it degraded a lot in the last days.

No, I meant https://www.avast.com/community-and-support (https://www.avast.com/community-and-support).  Using the http works fine.  I don't have any certificates saved for Avast in FF...just checked.

The reason I mention it is because some users on the forum have mentioned this to us so I'm passing this along to you.

So what you are doing will fix this problem?

Oh, now I see.

https://www.avast.com/community-and-support is something different than https://support.avast.com/. Certificate for our main www.avast.com website is currently installed only on a few of our webservers for testing purposes, so for some of you it is unavailable at all.

Now the first and third links works in FF.  The second doesn't.  At least it is a work in progress.

Hi sudhes,
Could you please start your own topic for your problem, as it is somewhat unrelated to the discussion.

You should post your operating system, security programs installed, and a description of the issue you are experiencing.
For info, the uninstall utility file name is aswClear5.exe, not aswgcr.exe.

Title: Re: support.avast.com website

I think it's just for the paid products, not at all sure, but I wouldn't expect a support system involving techs on a salary would be available to the users of the free version.

I'm totally frustrated with Avast. Spent over an hour with the avast tech. My pro version disappeared and the free version returned so the tech helped straighten that out. The next day my system shut down leaving a blue page sauomg there was am NTFS.SyS error. When I restarted the laptop the free version was back (the tech had previously uninstalled it)and it says it can't update. The blue page said to check my drivers. Apparently Avast was interferring with the drivers. Lo and behold Avast with it's brilliant messup won't allow me to download or even check on drivers. Frustrated, I decided to uninstall Avast and guess what? I can't uninstall it. So now, after paying for a virus protector I have nothing and have to take the laptop to a tech to take Avast off costing me well over $100.00 dollars. Please, tell me I'll be able to get my money back from Avast. I not only purchased the Pro, I purchased an extra disc which turned out to be the free version. After all this, I just want rid of it, I don't want it fixed. I want it off the computer and my money back.

Easier and quicker to ask here - Please start a New Topic of your own here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0) (click the New topic button at the top of the page see image)  and we will try to help.

Give an outline of the problem including any errors, etc. ?
And what happens if you tried a manual update from the avastUI, Maintenance, Update.

Also - Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair. This has in the past resolved this out of sync issue between reported and actual VPS version.
