Title: Version: 18.6.2349
Post by: MartinZ on August 21, 2018, 04:22:49 PM
Good news everyone,
new stable version 18.6.2349 has just been released. This time it's more about fixes and internal improvements.

What's new:

- Do Not Disturb Mode replaces Game Mode and adds support for non-game apps too

- Edge extension replaces the Internet Explorer one (https://www.microsoft.com/store/apps/9P5882STVN6X)

- SecureLine VPN component won't be part of AV. User will be offered to install standalone VPN client independent from AV (staged release not for all users now)

- Support for scanning TLS 1.3 traffic via Web Shield (Chrome, Firefox)

- Automatic redirect to search page if domain isn't found

Fixed:

- Firewall notification not displayed when network changed
- Detection dialog not displayed for Web Shield when set to Ask
- Wrong reporting of Wi-Fi Inspector scan progress percent
- Site blocking works again
- Rescue disc
- Reporting of AV and Firewall state to Windows Security Center
- Explorer scan result not added to Notification Center
- Removed Enable offline mode option in free version tray icon

How to install:

1. Update from your existing Avast version via Settings -> Update -> Update program

2. Or you can download and install from here

Online installers (recommended):

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe

Offline installers:

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup_offline.exe

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup_offline.exe

We hope you enjoy the new version!
AVAST Team

P.S.
For upcoming versions we work on completely new settings and full 64-bit version ;-)

Bugs:
- DND mode - if not installed, is still visible in GUI, when I click it, causes endless loading.
- Secureline VPN is visible in Components although is not installed.
Those two are already reported on last beta refresh (yesterday).

- When i click on full scan, first time appear results from previous scan and scan will not run.
A Japanese user also reported this issue with previous release version (18.5.2342), although I can't reproduce it.

I thought you planned to stop using the term "Security update" for a new version of the program (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=210678.msg1430822#msg1430822).  Still low priority, I suppose.

It could be related to Avast Free but I doubt it.
If I were to guess, I'd rather say that it's related to the offline installers, and user routines regarding the install procedure.
Personally, I always use the offline installers, run clean installs, and configure everything to my liking before I grant internet access to any software that I use.
This procedure has always worked just fine with Avast, except for this latest version.
There is definitely an issue with it!

That may be, but it seems that every new version of the program is now labeled as a "Security update", no matter what changes and fixes were made.  Is this not true?

I wonder if it's worth asking that kind of question
"security" is to be taken in the broad sense of the term, even the fix of this version can be considered as security update.
So , as far I'm concerned ,I consider...
Quote
- Site blocking works again
... as a security update regardless hight or low priority.
On the other hand, avast has chosen to display "security update" in its UI for program updates, so devs will not have fun changing this every time there is an update. :-\
I prefer that avast looks at problems (they always have something to do) rather than a display for the pleasure of the eyes

Before anyone else states that "it works for me"..
To verify this issue, you need to perform a clean install offline (using the offline installer), and then try to configure the program update settings offline!
This is how you reproduce this particular issue (which have never existed in previous Avast versions)!!
Title: Re: NEW Version: 18.6.2349
Post by: mchain on August 24, 2018, 03:26:03 AM
Well, doing an offline install while completely offline will, when done this way, give you a different outcome than if you were online while installing.  Granted, if you have Windows 10, you are protected by Windows Defender and are safer doing this online than when installing on XP with no a/v installed.  So, the option to install while online an a/v while running XP isn't a really safe option.  To me, this shows how old XP really is and points to the fact it really needs to be put to bed.

I've seen fixes come in while online and installing vs. and when installing offline they don't.  Only fix for is to run Avast EmUpdater/connect to the internet after install is done and/or reboot, which will automatically invoke EmpUdate anyway on restart.

Program update OK.What I've seen so far. The lack of translation in my licenses is not translated into Portuguese from Portugal and Portuguese Brazilian.I do not know if other languages besides the this also occurs, even with clean installation is english.

Bug is with the behavior shield, the avast icon is suddenlythe icon  status changes for attention.I open the interface avast and it shows that the behavior shield is disabled, I close the interface and icon returns to show that it is ok.but put the mouse pointer and displays the attention message.

Updated avast just now and I found the old problem which was supposed to have been fixed until the previous version.... proxy setting keeps being deleted. The proxy setting is very important to our work environment.

Having intermittent network issues with the new version, too.  Might work fine for 2 hours, 10 minutes, or 10 hours and then I can no longer get to the Internet connection on my Network.  I uninstalled Avast and I have had no network issues for the last couple of days.
Windows 7 Pro  64-bit.  Network icon in the system tray looks normal.

I have not tried a clean install, yet.

Should I try a clean install or drop back one version or two?  Got to get my client back up and running reliably
Any suggestions or workarounds appreciated.

It did indeed update smoothly - imperceptibly is a word that readily springs to mind. But did not any one notice that web pages now time out before loading, unless you disable protection and Avast seems to hog the available connections so that Outlook cannot find anymore:
'concurrent connection limit in Avast exceeded(pass:0, processes:OUTLOOK.EXE[48])' EmailShield.ini has no entry for the maximum number of connections, and as the folder is protected, even from an administrator, Coco cannot add one to it.  :-\

Time to disable Avast again, I must refresh the page....
'This site can’t be reached
id.avast.com took too long to respond.'

Coco doesn't really care, or should that be Coco does really not care, or even Coco does not care really, where the adverb is placed, but Coco does hope the bug is quickly fixed quickly and soon.

Kind regards

Stick with your other post for now, which I have answered.

Your suggestion that avast is hogging the connections is incorrect, when you get this concurrent connections error you will see what is eating the concurrent connections and Avast can't get a look in, not that it is using the connections.

Your own post shows what is using the connections "processes:OUTLOOK.EXE[48]" highlighted above.

Behavior shield is now cuase unseccap.exe to run, it shouldn't be and never has till recently and unseccap.exe is process  I never let stay running cause it opens up security issue, please fix

Before behavior shield started this only installing the cleanup component caused this, which why I removed it in first place. but removing that shield opens different security risk.

I cant say I am surpised by this, 3 years later they still didnt fix the slow loading on images in main avast screen, and that is on SSD on hdd it much worse, granted it not as bad as it use to be,

unseccap.exe can be terminated and behavior shield works fine

Hello!
Today after this update of Avast my computer have a strange behavior that it didn't have until today. Basically some games I play like Europa Universalis 4 or Rocket League, during the game it's minimize automatically the game while I didn't press alt + tab. I do count the minutes and I noticed that the game I play goes minimezed every 3:30 minutes.

I tried restarting the PC (the first thing I did), then I tried enable/disable the silent mode and lastly disable all avast components. None of this helped. Since yesterday I didn't have any issues and from today yes It's important to specific that I didn't installed any software or surfed malicious websites. I did like I do every day, facebook, gaming, reddit/9gag and some news.

Searching to google about this issue, I found this link:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/440/discussions/0/1738841319810907976/

It's been posted from a few days ago and the user which opened that tread said that he have Avast as antivirus aswell and by that I'm almost convinced that it's Avast fault since from yesterday, to today only this software got the update and nothing else happened to my PC as I said before.

Go to Menu> Settings> Components> Scroll down to Do Not Disturb Mode and disable it.
See if that makes a difference and report back.

Interesting, two things:
1.  presumably this feature isn't available/compatible with XP as it isn't in the Components > Performance section.
2.  it isn't installed on my win10 avast free installation.

I can't recall doing it and most of my recent program updates (on both my XP and win10 systems) have been manual program updates from the UI, not a clean install and custom settings.

It's been posted from a few days ago and the user which opened that tread said that he have Avast as antivirus aswell and by that I'm almost convinced that it's Avast fault since from yesterday, to today only this software got the update and nothing else happened to my PC as I said before.

If disabling Silent Mode (now Do Not Disturb mode) does not help, try to uninstall DND mode component.
You can do that via Settings => Components, or via Control Panel => Add/Remove Programs.

DND mode is indeed not compatible with XP and as such, cannot be installed there.

As for debugging this stealing focus problem, please also try killing the AvastUI.exe process before starting your game (without disabling DND mode). This needs to have self-defense disabled first in settings. Let us which of the two things helps and we can try reproducing it locally then.

Mind you having said that we are short on beta testers.

I'm back with news.
Unfortunatelly I don't have much information to give. All I can say is that I disabled 'Do Not Disturb Mode' and started a game which created issues. The game didn't alt+tab itself anymore.

Then I did the following:
- Closed the game, re-enabled Do Not Disturb Mode -> Start the game -> No issue (I found this strange)
- Restarted the computer -> Start the game -> No issue again

I'm not sure if only disabling / enabling this feature fixed my problem or just disappeared itself. I'll keep watching anyway. If the problem will appear in future, I'll try to test these configuration and come back. If I will not have anymore this issue, you won't see any reply from me here :-)

Thanks for the update. I would be very surprised if this was indeed caused by DND mode. Since you have it on now, in case you encounter the issue again trying killing AvastUI.exe instead - that would be my most likely culprit. Also if you can send us contents of your C:\ProgramData\Avast Software\Avast\log folder, we can have a look if we find anything strange here.

Note: even though the UI reports a restart is needed, disabling/re-enabling DND mode is applied immediately as long you have closed the programs and run them again.

This version really screwed me.

It is not listed on your changelog that I can see above.  But you REMOVED the ability to use leading asterisks in the exclusion list.  So */My Random Folder/* no longer works... and since I do not know the user profile name that is going to be on the computer it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to create an exclusion.

You also removed the ability to use *.exe it HAS to END in *... so "C:\Users\Public\Desktop\*.exe" NO LONGER WORKS!
Also as I had it "*\Users\Public\Desktop\*.exe" does not work ether.  Is the removal of your wild card support a bug or did you just do it to us intentionally?

Also.. The letters in the CAPTCHA are OBNOXIOUS!!! I CANNOT READ THEM!!!

You still have not fixed the bug where the hardened exclusion list is blank unless you add something to it, click okay and then go back.

eMail has stopped working.  When I run a test eMail it goes through.  But when my client encounters a virus I get NO EMAIL AT ALL!!

Otherwise.. great product!  Love it dearly.. It is just costing me hundreds of dollars and hours of labor so I am annoyed.  Oh, also annoyed that you are willfully installing a browser on my clients computers that they DO NOT WANT!  Please stop doing that.  It is completely counter productive to what you are and makes me wonder.

ALSO PLEASE FIX YOUR CAPTCHA!  I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO ENTER IN LETTERS FOR THE PAST 10 MINUTES.

I see people start complaining about issues, may I suggest implementing beta versions for volunteers which people can use and report issues before launching the update to everyone else? There are a lot of people which don't use forum for fixing solution but simply uninstall if something not work and you lose important amount of users.

I come back with another update,
I found out a connection between alt+tab game and Avast. When I play Europa Universalis 4 and instead of listening ingame music which I turn off, I'm listening in background Music from Youtube.
When I disable the DND feature, I don't have issue, when I re-enable I have the issue again.

The strange behaviour happens only on youtube, If I have chrome opened with lots of tabs I don't have any issue (If that helps). I tried to kill the avastUI.exe process but I can't because I have access denied error. This error happens even if I keep youtube tab opened and paused the music in background.

Hope that helps.

I thought you planned to stop using the term "Security update" for a new version of the program (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=210678.msg1430822#msg1430822).  Still low priority, I suppose.

no, we just changed the urgency from yellow to green

I see.  I'm afraid that change was so subtle that it escaped my notice.

In my opinion, it is the terminology used which should be changed.  As I have said before, "Security update" suggests fixes related only to security.  "New version" is, in my opinion, a more appropriate term which, by the way, is still used in Settings > Update > Program.

So here is a weird thing Avast does I recently noticed:

If a file is found with a suspected infection, I get an alert with a screen asking me what I want to do. Move it to the Virus Chest or add an exception. Or report a false positive.

There isn't an option to do nothing. But I can at least still just close the screen and not make a choice. So, fine. Annoying, convoluted, but OK. ( I need to just let it be sometimes*, without keep adding exceptions that I then later have to remove again)

However, then there will be a notification that a file was moved to the Virus Chest. Which it WASN'T! To be clear: it shouldn't, because I didn't tell it to do so. But the notification still says it was moved. So that is confusing, and made me double-check if the file in question was still present on my system or whether it was quarantined.

That notification is incorrect. Having that screen pop up does not mean a file was also moved to the Virus Chest, as there are other options.

*: this does not mean I'm trying to run the executables that are suspect. I might just be unpacking and repacking them.

Title: Re: NEW Version: 18.6.2349, Prolonged Scanning
Post by: janetofficeworker on September 19, 2018, 07:42:19 PM
Avast Forum Team:

Your new version seems to work very well, but I noticed my customized Quick Scan takes much longer to run than usual.  It jumped from about 28 minutes daily to (as of 9/19) one hour.  The first incremental change was to approximately 35 minutes, then came 40 minutes, until reaching the one hour mark today.  Perhaps my laptop's system is failing, except the scan's run time seemed fairly consistent until recently.  I didn't change the schedule, and only modified the settings after noticing the apparent sluggishness, by subtracting one folder to see if that helped the scan move along. No help, though.  In fact, if anything, subtracting the folder seemed to cause further delay, thus leading to today's hour-long scan.  Not really, but sort of . . .  Is this a known bug?  I can wait for a bug resolution, but am nonetheless curious.

Thanks very much.

Hi,

After updating to this new version everything that has a link in it being skype, email ..... pops up with a threat being detected. If you turn off your web shield it stops but keeps on popping up when you have it turned on. None of the threats are to known sites with issues but merely to Microsoft (skype) and emails to know "good" sites.

Please can you assist with how to resolve the issue.

After your last update all PC computers in our company (5 of them) were crazy. Every few websites very good known url addresses, are blocked by avast with a note:
"We stoped the connection with a file HTML:Script-inf, because was infected with a virus...." - and here avast gives a name of a web address that was put into a browser.
This is nuts, Avast even bloced it's own website avast.com for the same reason. So something here is very wrong. Please help quick, we can't work with this issue and we can't work without antivirus as well :(

This morning after turning my pc on, avast tray icon informed me that my system was not secure. I clicked resolve problem via GUI and after a few minutes had elapsed avast asked me to reboot, which I did. Then my PC for some reason performed a CHKDSK. There was something downloading and then Avast asked me to reboot once again. I did so. Bottom line is that my programme was updated to latest version despite the fact I had set programme update to manual. Am I going to complain about it ? Hell no, latest version is running smoothly and my PC is working like a Swiss clock. The GUI is a bit on the large side thus demonstrating that Avast still has some consideration for senior citizens.  ;) 8)
