Post by: Vlk on March 23, 2011, 10:26:29 PM
Now replaced by version 6.0.1086. Please see here for details: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=76349.0

Hi everyone,

we will soon be releasing a new program update of avast. And as usual, we're making it available for public testing a few days before the official release.
Edit: now updated to build 6.0.1044.

This is hopefully going to be a smooth service release, designed really just to fix some of the issues of the original v6.0.1000 build.

Here's the list of the most important changes:
- solved an incompatibility with ZoneAlarm (WinXP)
- improved installation of the WebRep plugins (especially Firefox)
- solved a crash condition in the avast sandbox
- setup programs now smaller by ~20%
- Community features and the Welcome screen can now be turned on/off directly from program settings
- solved an incompatibility with Outpost firewall
- solved a bug related to the AutoSandbox offer (WinXP)
- gadget can now be removed by simply closing it
- new setup icons

New in v6.0.1027:
- attempt to fix new compatibility problems with GameGuard and sXe _rootkits_
- SafeZone improvements
- localization updates (including WebRep)
- improved sandbox logging)
- SafeZone is now a standalone setup package (can be installed/uninstalled separately)

New in v6.0.1035:
- solved Firefox WebRep plugin on non-English Windows
- solved a few incompatibility problems in BehavShield (e.g. TeraCopy)
- improvements in password processing
- improvements in the program uninstaller
- sandbox improvements
- fixed various UI issues introduced in the previous pre-release build

And new in v6.0.1044:
- solved a memory leak in the avast gadget
- solved a few things in WebRep
- autosandbox-related fixes
- WinXP: File System Shield not doing repetitive scans anymore
- improvements in SafeZone isolation
- improvements in the avast! sandbox (better TDL shielding etc)
- localization updates

Download links:
snipped

You can either install from scratch, or over an existing installation of avast (any version). Users of the previous pre-release builds (6.0.1021, 6.0.1027, 6.0.1035) can also use the built-in program updater.

Thanks
Vlk

I just updated from version 6.0.1035 Free to version 6.0.1044 Free. The previous version was working well on my Windows 7 (X86) system. The new version installed and appears to be working. Interestingly, Avast did not alert my to the new program update. I set the program to alert me when a new version is available.

Update using GUI worked fine.

However there were three apparent issues with 6.0.1035 one of which remains and the other two I am not sure about.

The issue that remains is.

I uninstalled the Safe Zone because of one of the apparent three issues with 6.0.1035 that I noticed had to do with exiting Safe Zone and the computer display.  When I exited Safe Zone my Monitor became dimmed.  See signature for my grahics/display chip.  So I uninstalled Safe Zone by uninstalling the Gadget and then rerunning the 6.0.1035 installer with "Safe Zone" option "x'd" out.   That appeared to uninstall Safe Zone.  However, when I went reinstall Safe Zone using both the 6.0.1035 and 6.0.1044 installers I got an error message and Safe Zone did not appear to reinstall.

So at this point it appears that I need to uninstall AIS and then reinstall AIS with the Safe Zone checked, which is the default, in order to get Safe Zone operational again.

It would be tremendously helpful if there was a way to uninstall AIS and retain the settings during an uninstall.  I did not try a "moderate" uninstall with Revo Uninstaller to see if this would retain the settings because like I said I really don't want to risk that I will have to configure my settings again after uninstalling and reinstalling.

Anyone have any suggestions, other than doing an uninstall and reinstall which I don't want to do, because like I said above I don't want to have to configure all my AIS settings again.

That has nothing to do with the update, as has been said in so many different topics relating to the webrep (you can't have failed to have noticed them), this is down to the back-end servers for the webrep process. When the icons are grey the servers aren't available.

The webrep requires that you have cookies enabled for avast.com or any data relating to your votes is lost, but the other data on votes is retained on the servers.

Say for instance avast main page in google's search engine shows up green perfect! But under that is the forums and it is gray. *This experience is new to me*

on page 2 of this thread boombastik has explained my issue....  *this is new to me*

Webrep interferes with the operation of Wot in Google and Twitter.

Google appear two Webrep icons in each search and none of Wot, Twitter does not appear no icon in the links.

Temporarily disable Webrep and Wot works normally.

Happens with Firefox 4

Update via UI running OK thus far.

I noticed the server latency thing here too.  Never noticed it before that I know of.

Also notice some Web Rep indicators with Yellow not Green indicating low user votes.  I like the yellow for the first bar and would like to see it all the time if the first bar is only indicated.

Beneath very little GUI error --> the correct word for "vote" within the german webrep box should be "Abstimmen" instead of "Stimmen".

Nevertheless a great product!!

Gadget installed automatically when right clicking desktop and selecting gadgets. Didn't select Avast gadget to have it install. I closed the gadget and was unable to get it to show on the desktop again. Gadget does not show under gadget listing. Only way I found to have gadget listed is double clicking aswSidebar in the Avast folder.

Can anyone else duplicate this?

Was a clean install.

Behavior Shield seems to not be analyzing anything since the update to .44.  Time frame wise after the update nothing is being looked at and normally there are a few things analyzed.

Update: After another restart I have 2 items analyzed.

Related: How long does the "Last event analyzed" show up?  How often is this cleared and and reset?  Less that 12 hours ago I had some things there and now nothing is indicated as last analyzed.

Thanks

Gadget installed automatically when right clicking desktop and selecting gadgets. Didn't select Avast gadget to have it install. I closed the gadget and was unable to get it to show on the desktop again. Gadget does not show under gadget listing. Only way I found to have gadget listed is double clicking aswSidebar in the Avast folder.

Can anyone else duplicate this?

Windows 7/64 bit

nope, works as expected here

I don't agree with that, there's no major issue that would justify that indefinitely like you seem to say.
There is a BSOD while trying to access the Safe Zone.
The problem is completely reproducible in my computer.

Will the dump help in anyway or you can reproduce the problem from your side?

I don't think there's any bluescreen here (especially not during such a basic operation like accessing the SafeZone) - so I suppose PK would appreciate the dump.

Getting a message that SafeZone browser didn't close down properly after closing safezone using the red x and then re-opening safezone. Message is located under the address bar in the browser.

If I close the browser before closing safezone I don't receive this message.

I have exactly the same issue. Once you click the gadget off the desktop it is gone not showing in gadget window and you have to restart it via avast! program folder "aswSidebar.gadget".
Complete new installation does not change the problem.

WebRep works all time fine in the toolbar of FF4. If you search with Google the WebRep symbol on the search results are allways grey while the symbol in the tool bar works ok.
If you than refresh the page WebRep on search results is indicating normal. If you search after that a different thing the whole procedure starts again!!!
There is no exception to this rule whatever you do. Even a new installation will not help.

Sorry chaps I was a little too fast.

Doubleclicking the file "aswSidebar.gadget" installs the gadget into the win7 gadget window and it is accessible from there for the future.
Most likely the problem came up after I uninstalled the gadget from gadget window one time having trouble to kill it in version 6.0.1000.
Avast! installer since that time refused to install it back into the gadget window even during clean installation. Strange behaviour of the installer. ???

Problem solved for now. 8)

Confirmed here.

I use NoScript with Firefox, and don't normally allow JavaScript on Google or Yahoo.   Google results on refresh would show the various green or red WebRep ratings, but never yellow without JavaScript.  Yahoo results wouldn't even show the WebRep URL icons (regardless of color) unless JavaScript was enabled for Yahoo.  JavaScript must be enabled for the WebRep pop-up to appear when hovering over a WebRep icon in the results pages.

That is going to happen during any program update now. If you have your own sound files that you want to keep/use, don't overwrite the files in the corresponding language folder (e.g. 1033 for English), but rather create a new folder called "Custom" next to the language folders - and simply store your files there.

I put the sound files in a special folder on all 5 of my computers plus put them on several CDs too.

The only one I care about is the data base update file.

Thanks for that, need to change the tutorial a bit...though that is where a soundpack puts the files, and I think a sound pack can have just one sound in it. Also, a soundpack doesn't have problems with self defence and UAC ;)

Why don't you get the latest pre-release? It fixes a lot of stuff and adding possiblity to remove Like Avast? button and URL to twitter when virus is found.

Well to be honest if the 6.0.1000 build is working fine for a user and they have no issues or niggles, then there is zero point in them using the pre-release version unless they are ardent beta/pre-release users.

Agreed. I still have 6.0.1000 on the Vista machine and it has no issues at all. The only reason I tried the pre release on this machine was to see if the auto-sandbox would be fully operational on XP. It had issues in the 1000 build.

The only thing 1044 did was put the lady's voice back. That was easy to deal with. ;D

That is going to happen during any program update now. If you have your own sound files that you want to keep/use, don't overwrite the files in the corresponding language folder (e.g. 1033 for English), but rather create a new folder called "Custom" next to the language folders - and simply store your files there.

i m not hearing any sound in avast 6.0.1000 i.e. update, threat detected, etc ???

1) Do you have English language activated & installed?
2) Check Settings>Sounds if the option "Use voiceover sounds" is checked

i hav default language english and USE VOICEOVER SOUND is checked

Try to repair avast! or reinstall English Language

i hav reinstalled avast, i delete every old avast folder and registry, cleared registry with CCleaner and now the voices and popups are back

thnx for the help

Install over 6.0.1000 Free. So far no major problem. :)

Found a small gui glitch (avast! logo and "ウェブ評価" text are overlapped).

Today I tried the "AVAST! Screen Saver".

Started wonderfull but I noticed the scanner after it is finished it started all over again and did that over and over. A never ending story.  8)

Is this behaviour by design or is that a bug?
I would be satisfied when it scanned just once and that's it!

Another option is to schedule a scan. And... yes it will continue to scan until you do something on your pc.

Seems they support only released version like the 6.0.1000.
Version 6.0.1044 is a "Pre-Release".
Just wait a few days and the new release will be available. If you install that one everything should be working.

Title: Screen brightness drops when I switch to SafeZone.
Post by: Vladimyr on March 27, 2011, 10:44:09 AM
I don't know if this is specific to 6.0.1044 because I have not tried it with earlier versions.

XP SP3 - nVidia 7600 - dual monitors

When I switch to SafeZone the video output signal apparently drops on both monitors so that the screens appear dull grey and stay that way until Windows is restarted.
Also, both the mouse pointer and/or the flashing insertion point within the text box become invisible (compare attached images and note that screen capture does not show the dullness).

The screens flash at full brightness briefly when I switch back and forth between SZ and normal but a restart is the only cure.

Since this version I also have the same trouble as many others reported here:
WebRep works all time fine in the toolbar of FF4. If you search with Google the WebRep symbol on the search results are allways grey while the symbol in the tool bar works ok.
If you than refresh the page WebRep on search results is indicating normal. If you search after that a different thing the whole procedure starts again!!!
There is no exception to this rule whatever you do. Even a new installation will not help.

I'm having this sometimes.  Never noticed it before the last update.  Refresh for some reason turns the grey ones green.

Me too. I can also confirm this issue(bug). Just for this release. Please fix it!

Thanks! Zoli from Hungary.

Up to now I had the impression WebRep is not a "Stand Alone" program but just an integer part of avast! AV.
Anyway it seems to be more or less one of the last problems with this build.

I'll try it later today.

The nVidia driver update has messed up the display of some windows, reversed the monitors for no apparent reason and hasn't solved the problem.:( I'm already thinking "rollback".
I just can't use SafeZone unless I first un-"attach" the Secondary monitor and then re-"attach" and re-align them afterwards.

Thanks
Vlk

I have just installed this version and found two bugs: 1) when starting my vista laptop the calendar & notes gadgets laid one upon the other and the avast popup didn´t show as I set it. 2) I run the option "analysis during start" and choose "restart computer" from inside avast but then the computer froze. I shut it with task manager and restarted. Avast did run the analysis. Other wise the program it´s running smoothly. I hope these bugs be solved for the stable version

guys just a request: really no need to open Avast UI when launching an update check from the gadget, a small popup would do the job to confirm or not that an update is available, to confirm or not that it's been applied. Could even be integrated in the gadget, but in the meantime, just a popup in the icon tray would be fine.

Noticed again that after all this time the virus db version number bug is still there.  The summary wants me to update, when I do the update says I already have.  Not a real problem; just something to invite more questions.
And the next update should fix the problem. Dump of AvastSvc.exe sent to Avast! as mismatch.zip.

OK, just experience a problem in the 6.0.1044 build (happened on both win XP Pro and my win7 netbook):
The monthly Scheduled Full System I created to Run on the 1st of the month at 1am. Well in the we small hours of this morning (the 29th) unbeknown to me it started in the background and just kept looping, the system date and time are correct.

If I Stopped it, it would fire again and again and again, nothing would stop it and I couldn't get into the settings to cancel the schedule. Pausing it was the only way to stop the looping.

See, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=74914.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=74914.0) for more info.

This made me thing of the other instances of High CPU % that were reported by others, could this be the problem.

@Logos.  I haven't seen it since the last build either, but Vlk asked me to send a dump when I saw it again so they could chase it down before the release.  Seems to related to the timing of the wakeup DB update vs the internet becoming active when coming out of sleep in the morning.

There have been several threads indicating the same or similar problem that I am experiencing.  I have not seen any of the techs reply.  I am posting here to help make sure it is seen by Avast! folks.

After windows update install of Win7 SP1 on x64, all browsers cannot access the internet while internet connection is fine.  This was with Avast! 5.xx, Windows firewall, no other security software.  Email works as do program updates.  Disable all Avast! shields and browsers work fine.  Re-enable shields and still fine.  Reboot: same problem - disable, re-enable shields, fine again.

Uninstall and run clean uninstall utility.  Reboot twice and install latest versions.  Same problem.

Go to the Avast folder in program files and double click "aswSidebar". This will install it. I also had this problem. It may be Program Files (x86) for you though.

Same problem here! Had this issue with the last few v5 releases before the v6 Beta (which did the same) but the final v6.0.1000 release was OK until a few days ago when it started doing it again? Uninstalled and installed v6.0.1044 and it does the same! I've now installed CIS as my confidence in Avast to release a stable product has been severly dented these last few months!!

This build seems stable enough for me. All weird probs (eg. Teracopy) seem to be fixed.
As a side note, the script shield seems to work ONLY when running WMP, no other app that I can think of triggers script scanning.

Dont know if this is a bug or not but when i select these settings on first screenshot, i am told that writing isn't being scanned on second screenshot:

Denkfehler.

Screen 1 sind die Einstellungen, die greifen, wenn in Screen 2 das Häkchen gesetzt wird. Also der Haken in Screen 2 ist Voraussetzung dafür, dass die Settings in Screen 1 greifen.

just re-installed the virtualization component in AIS, I wasn't prompted to reboot. No problem so far I can already sandbox what I want, but the sandbox section doesn't appear yet in Avast UI... probably needs a reboot.

I have a problem here with IE9/32 if set to always run sandboxed, it works one time out of a few tries if done from the shortcut in Windows startmenu (not a pinned icon, a real shortcut). At the opposite it works as expected with a desktop shortcut. There's no such issue with IE9/64 and other browsers.

Just a question. Has there ever been a thought to have different sections of the forum for the different versions of Avast? I mean one for the free version, one for Pro, and one for AIS. Maybe the AIS and Pro could be combined. I'm just asking because sometimes it's hard to distinguish which version people are talking about when they report problems.

+1

I support this idea. Separate the Free and AIS/Pro Versions.

I'm wondering what's the show stopper for this build. It seems to take ages and it's now standing still for days. Is there some bigger issue that we're not aware of and is preventing avast! team from releasing this update?

okay it's taking so much time, with no word from Avast explaining the reasons... I'm taking for granted that build 1044 is the new stable build and consider this pre-release testing phase terminated ::)

Well now that it is after the end of March I rather doubt that. Being the first to report this problem in the forums on the 29th March; the area has been identified (relating to the workaround), so they have at the very least until next month and probably next year when the DST/BST changes again to find this bug and squash it.

So I would say it has to be something else, but I don't think it will be that long before another refresh. Though they may want to squash this and include it in the next refresh/release to avoid too frequent program updates.

There are 2 or 3 issues left they're working on, I believe.
- scheduling bug
- slow pdf scan on x64 systems
- slow boot-time scan on x64 systems

Maybe minor things, but they should be corrected. Other than that, the 1044 is running just perfectly IMHO.

I believe I fixed the scheduler bug, and PDFs don't have anything to do with any particular build of version of avast.
I'd say the reason is more likely connected to a few developers, including Vlk, being in US, probably testing something at Microsoft.

My simple way would be to save those extrabig files in a special folder and add that folder to the exclusion list.

Not very elegant maybe, but that should do the trick?

yeah this could be done but some times pics do contains viruses but i think an infected file wouldn't be biggerthan 100mb

Usually, no... but as far as I remember some talks on AV conferences, the biggest seen infected samples were close to 1GB.
After all, a huge installer can also be infected by a file infector.

It's been gone a while, many of us had been asking for it to be closed with almost 100 pages it was a monster and open a new one effective from Avast 6.0. They didn't close it, they deleted it.

There are plans for a replacement function but that hasn't been notified to avast users yet.

Hmm weird, I have AIS 6.0.1000 final on a relatives PC(no beta's were installed before.) The computer was on so I thought let's see if .1044 is already released and I checked for program updates within Avast GUI. It found an update and it seems it really updated(you see all the modules named when the completion bar progresses) and then it asked for reboot, so I rebooted, checked program version, which was still .1000 and checked for program updates and it said .1000 is latest. So it's really weird, the version was already current and somehow it found some update which doesn't exist, it updated and is still current :S

Is it normal for it to ask for a reboot when it just updates the defs? I don't think mine did last time I did a manual update, and it doesn't on the automatic.

Not entirely true, as they can also update the AV engine with a VPS update. Also as far as we know an upcoming update of the boot-time scan ( adding an emulator ) will be done by a VPS update :)

im guessing the next build will still be a beta since they are adding chrome to the webrep and there are other fixes and they need to test and make sure they are fixed plus there are no major bugs with webrep and chrome?

Does this mean that Vlk has to "land" in order for a Program Update to take place?   :D

Yet another bug.... When i run quick scan or full scan or any scan from GUI and close the UI of avast then a notification comes near system tray displaying the scan progress...
So after scan being completed i close that notification but when I right click on avast sys tray icon and then click on show  last popup message it shows screenshot 1st and when I click resume or any button then it shows screenshot 2nd.

Any valuable comments please...

Regards
Ash

thanks, the problem is that I didn't install SafeZone during the initial setup, I added it later, and now I realize that I don't have any SafeZone tab in Avast UI ??? ... so I can't reset it.

okay I could solve it. No idea how that happened, as said I could launch the SZ from the gadget button but no browser launching and the browser shortcut there lost its icon + no SZ tab in Avast UI.

So I checked the change menu from the uninstall entry and SafeZone appeared there as not installed ??? I checked the SZ entry, rebooted and now it works again as expected.

edit: the browser starts now automatically when launching the SZ, but minimized, no big deal.

Avast is now detecting it's definition files as locked and cannot be scanned.  I know there's no need to scan them, but this is new.  Maybe a new definition will change that.  Whatever it is it's not happened before and I've changed nothing.

I referring to the scan results window where you can repair, delete, etc.  It simply showed that that six files could not be scanned.  The error message was: "Error: The system cannot find the path specified (3)"

Sorry I'm not good a screen shots.  I guess I've never found a good, easy and free program.

Use Snipping Tool to capture screen shots
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Use-Snipping-Tool-to-capture-screen-shots

Then Additional Options... then Attach: and Browse... to where you save the capured images preferably in the Pictures folder.

I'll be delighted to enlighten you, however, ATM I'm at the office where we only have XP available, and I don't know by heart where exactly the snipping tool is found in Win 7.
Maybe just search a little in "accessories" - I really don't know the name right now.

Did not really feel the need to screen capture utilities personally. Alt+PrintScreen for the active window, do whatever you want to do with it. MS Paint is just about enough for purposes of attaching a screenshot to this forum.

Are you sure that it is saying locked and can't be scanned ?
That isn't an error/notice that I'm familiar with, normally that would be an access denied notice.

My guess is you are getting a can't be found reason for not being scanned:
If so - Nothing to worry about, those are old virus definitions folders and avast is doing some housecleaning to keep the size used on the hard disk to a minimum. This just happens to have occurred between the time you started the scan and it reaching that old defs folder.

I no longer have the initial popup summery, just the log.  It doesn't say anything about being locked, so it's possible I misread what I first saw.  The rest of the error message is as described.

I just do a print screen and then paste into Irfanview and crop it and save it with maybe a sharpening done. Works as well as a seperate program for me.

I do agree that WebRep is not as important as problems with the main core of Avast! I don't even use it myself, or anything like it.

There are 125.000.000 Avast users.
Let's say 5% updated to V6 = 6.250.000
Let's say 5% of those have a WebRep problem = 312.500
Let's say 1% of those make it to this forum to complaint = 3.125

We have not seen this number by far - if that was a really common problem, the forum would be flooded.

That means 60% are still on any of the 5.x versions... :-\
This is weird... I understand managed clients on 4.8, but I don't understand why to stay at version 5.

Me neither...!! ???
I just did put the data together and that would be the result. ;)

I know there's been Webrep problems, but I just figured out the when enabled in FF it causes my iGoogle home page to not function properly.  (Some windows don't respond or fully load.)  Disable and it works just fine.

Thought I mention this as I don't recall seeing this as a mentioned problem.

I downloaded and installed this pre-release build of Avast Internet Security which has its own firewall, but when I installed it, it didn't turn off Windows Firewall.  I'm not sure what previous releases have done in this respect.

I'm Windows 7 Pro 32-bit.

When I turn off Windows Firewall, Windows gives its usual dire warnings and action center messages like it doesn't recognize Avast's firewall being on (which it is).

1) Is Windows Firewall supposed to be ON or OFF when using Avast Internet Security?
2) If it is supposed to be OFF, why is Windows not recognizing Avast's firewall?

im pretty sure i remember Vlk saying somewhere that this is intentional , as windows firewall is realted to other things as well such as IPSEC. so to answer your question, its ok for windows firewall to be on as well if memory serves...

I would say it rather depends on what other add-ons you have as there appears to be a conflict with the firefox optimize google add-on, since you don't use firefox as your default browser I rather doubt you have many add-ons much less optimize google.

Since your image doesn't actually show your being on igoogle.com but clicking a link in the forum.avast.com, it is a bit misleading.

Then your opinion about firefox and associated add-ons is a busted flush as this is almost certainly related a conflict between webrep and optimize google.

How would you know that firefox add-ons, are known to malfunction when you don't use any, total cr*p again, since you have zero experience of using them.

I have something around 30 different add-ons and aside from the webrep it would appear that the all work and don't malfunction, in my 'practical' experience.

I don't think it's a situation where the FF add-on's are not playing nice with each other as they work superbly (as always), except when the Webrep is enabled.  That's why I think it's a webrep issue. I've got 23 active add-on's (more when they are updated for 4.0) and have had no issues--until the latest avast beta.

Good luck with CIS and stable releases.

Just came back to see what progress has been made on Avast and so far nothing unfortunatley! As to that comment DavidR, CIS has been running without incident for me so it's stability is just fine, I've run their firewall for over a year and never had a problem with that either. If wasn't for the Web Shield in Avast blocking web access I'd still be using Avast today!

That might well be the case for you now, but their forums have had such reports of instability in their beta and release builds, some have even come to avast because of that. So really nothing different, the grass is always greener, etc. etc.

I agree. Avast is concentrating too much on additional features and add-ons. I would want only a light weight but strong anti-virus program really. If I wanted sandboxing, I would use sandboxie. I don't even care about a gadget.

Please reduce bloat/load on system and update the definitions every 2 hours if required, rather than get bogged down in features/add-ons.

You guys are doing very well, v6 is certainly a great improvement, but think of how much more could have been done.

avast! is making a environment for virus free computing this web rep addon will have a great function in near future. And Sandbox is very important as I listen to vlk interview few days ago....
The only thing I want to change in avast is its UI, which it should either change or give us an option for that...
Rest avast is the best... You don't believe I have installed avast 6 times from scratch in just a week. The reason is I wanted a antivirus with good UI but I find just UI in other antivirus nothing else... I came back to avast because its so light on resources and just the best.

The people working there (developer and vlk) are constantly thinking about our safety and ways to keep us safe...

What SMB issues? The missing files were fixed there.
Can you be more specific please?

As for the "how much more could have been done"... nice phrase, but doesn't say anything at all.
The virus lab and developers are two different groups of people - mixing them together doesn't make much sense (even if you thought the additional features are not relevant, which we certainly don't).

Igors remark was not in response to yours.  8)

What he was trying to say (I believe) is that development of new features has no impact whatsoever on virus lab work and consequently does not affect the virus def update intervals and / or quality in any way.

Ondrej was traveling, and came back last Sunday, and Petr is still traveling and will come back tomorrow ( Saturday ). So the CTO and a Senior Developer ( were ) away, and the fact that they want to add WebRep for Chrome can explain the delay :)

Since you didn't provide a link I am assuming (yea I know what can happen when you assume something :) that you are referring to the System Management Bus and connection problems with Avast. SMB is known to have a short fuse withe respect to its timeout feature and this could be causing a connection problem.

On the other hand you could be referring to Server Message Block otherwise known as MSFT Windows Network or even San Miguel Beer. ;D

Please clarify.

Thanks :)

Avast 6 badly needs "Exclusions" rules for Mail, P2P, UI shields

typical reason:
.log text files for history logging
report files

example:
mIRC with open 30 channels, each saving own log
avast is now scanning them like mad in p2p shield on each write

the delay is most likely due to Vlk being away during a week or so, nothing else. So there's not much to expect. The build (1044) is not a beta for a new version, just a pre-release with a few bug fixes, and as far as I'm concerned, 1044 is a stable build. Stop speculating guys, we're not testing Avast 7 here ;D

Cosign!

If you don't want WebRep you can uninstall it.  If you don't want Sandboxing, you can turn it off.  No one is forced to take those features, but they are there if you want them.  I posted the shortcomings of Web Rep, but also it's potential in another thread, where the main factor remains giving it time to develop.

Avast is still lighter on resources than so much of the competition.  I mean maybe MSE may be lighter, but it doesn't have Avast's power, heuristic scanning, sandboxing, or multiple daily updates.  Still thrilled how Avast puts out most often 2-3 updates a day, checking every four hours, and the free competition only does it once every 24 hours. (or reboot.)

Avast is the clear winner here.  The free version has more power than most of the paid products competition, and is lighter on resources than the paid products competition as well!

This is the best AV without question!

avast! is making a environment for virus free computing this web rep addon will have a great function in near future.

I'm sorry,

I think I quoted the wrong poster here!  My response above was intended to be a comment to the poster who had said that Avast was getting to have too many add-ons like Web Rep.  And my response was to say that if you don't like Web Rep, you can uninstall it.  This was not intended for Ashish!  My apologies!

I don't have time to go back and look for the exact quote, but I wanted to clarify, because the way I wrote that original post seems awkward.  Sorry!

If thats the reason then they should give us a stable version and get back to business edition... Because that will end all waiting minds here...

I personally don't believe that this is the reason, and please stop guessing DavidR already told us about this...
It will come when avast people think it should come...

Right now I am happy that the 1044 build is quite stable and also HAPPY  ;D with avast RAP test results..

Ok, please don't get me wrong, I read that phrase many times since I'm accompanying avast forum. I saw many developing release cycles before, but this time is different, it is atypical, that silence is "screaming" to me, I'm and other people sure are concerned about our Heroes. If there wasn't an interview a shor time ago, I would start to think that something happened with Vlk or within the Czech Republic at all. I hope I'm very, very wrong.

Hi everyone,

we will soon be releasing a new program update of avast. And as usual, we're making it available for public testing a few days before the official release.
Edit: now updated to build 6.0.1044.

This is hopefully going to be a smooth service release, designed really just to fix some of the issues of the original v6.0.1000 build.

Here's the list of the most important changes:
- solved an incompatibility with ZoneAlarm (WinXP)
- improved installation of the WebRep plugins (especially Firefox)
- solved a crash condition in the avast sandbox
- setup programs now smaller by ~20%
- Community features and the Welcome screen can now be turned on/off directly from program settings
- solved an incompatibility with Outpost firewall
- solved a bug related to the AutoSandbox offer (WinXP)
- gadget can now be removed by simply closing it
- new setup icons

New in v6.0.1027:
- attempt to fix new compatibility problems with GameGuard and sXe _rootkits_
- SafeZone improvements
- localization updates (including WebRep)
- improved sandbox logging)
- SafeZone is now a standalone setup package (can be installed/uninstalled separately)

New in v6.0.1035:
- solved Firefox WebRep plugin on non-English Windows
- solved a few incompatibility problems in BehavShield (e.g. TeraCopy)
- improvements in password processing
- improvements in the program uninstaller
- sandbox improvements
- fixed various UI issues introduced in the previous pre-release build

And new in v6.0.1044:
- solved a memory leak in the avast gadget
- solved a few things in WebRep
- autosandbox-related fixes
- WinXP: File System Shield not doing repetitive scans anymore
- improvements in SafeZone isolation
- improvements in the avast! sandbox (better TDL shielding etc)
- localization updates

Download links:
Free AV: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/6.0.1044/setup_av_free.exe

Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/6.0.1044/setup_ais.exe

You can either install from scratch, or over an existing installation of avast (any version). Users of the previous pre-release builds (6.0.1021, 6.0.1027, 6.0.1035) can also use the built-in program updater.

Thanks
Vlk

Does also not work on Windows 2000; error message: "Cannot find entrypoint of procedure FindActCtxSectionStringW in DLL of Kernel32.DLL" Any solution? pls inform.

Eric

I don't see any usage of the mentioned function in the current internal build, so it has probably been fixed already. I'd suggest to wait for the next beta refresh.

If it is true...
For one side: Awesome!!!
For other side: what is the reason that it is not posted here for us to test?
And avast team could release some version correcting the most urgent bugs.

Well because the released version is a iteration of the tested version. So you can't expect the same version to be released...
And ya they will sure fix the bugs we have reported so far.. :D
I hope we will also get the reason for the delay ..Cheers

I hope they fix the auto-sandbox, not user-friendly and keeps alerting when installing updates and legitimate programs. Also when a program runs in auto-sandbox, its hard to tell if its actually running in auto-sandbox and whether the program has any malware characteristics.

This is autosandbox... If it is zero-noisy, it won't be doing its job.
If you want to reduce your protection, just disable it and you won't be warned at all.

But honestly, I can also be wrong, that I had to set it to ask in the beta..??!

But that's not the point, if Quadcore sets his to ask, it should work ok.

Which is the problem that we spoke about marking what are the default settings (* by the description of check box, etc.) so that the user knows they are default settings or there is no other way to tell.

Other than by resetting it to default settings in troubleshooting [6.0.1044], which is a bit severe if you just want to know what the defaults were. You might want to check something, but you don't want to completely reset defaults to find out.

Since there is no export or import settings function you would have to set all your custom settings, scans, exclusions, trusted processes, etc. etc.

...what must be called a shame. That would really be useful. Whenever I have someone install Avast on his PC, I have to telephone / remote service him through all the settings. If I had an import-file readily available... *dream*

Something we have been asking for for a considerable time, as long as we had been asking for a reset to defaults function to give a start point to resolve problems for those that are tweak crazy.

We got one wish but not the other.

How much longer do we have to wait for the final release and I'm getting worried about Avast trying to resolved their bug problem, can I ask Vlk or Igor for their current feedback please on how they are going :-\ :-\ :-\

How long - Until its ready, there really is little point in speculating or constantly asking when its going to be. When it is released you will have a pleasant surprise, just get one with your normal routine.

I'm sure you all have better things to do than keep asking the indeterminate question, how much longer, when will it be ready, etc. etc. etc. isn't going to make it happen any sooner.

Which is the problem that we spoke about marking what are the default settings (* by the description of check box, etc.) so that the user knows they are default settings or there is no other way to tell.
I'm not following this exactly. Will the * be only when the default are present? If you change the value the * disappears? Maybe this would require such a lot of GUI implementation...

No it will be there for all time (until avast change any default value), to indicate that this is/was a default value. So fields without this indication aren't default values.

I don't believe it would take much to edit the screens as it wouldn't require any changes to translation as this would just be another image/object on the UI screen, see example.

I like the text version better. It's more work to incorporate, but it has the advantage to give default values where free editing is possible (see update interval setting).

Where there are dropdowns, the word "Default" should show up with the default item (blue arrow - just in case you wouldn't understand...  8) )

The main problem is in the length of the description already, some languages are much longer. As I mentioned that would also require all languages to have further translation.

It is just as annoying like kids in the back seat asking Are we there yet?

It will be released when its ready.

Constantly repeating "It will be released when its ready." is not much less annoying, tbh.

Since there is no export or import settings function you would have to set all your custom settings, scans, exclusions, trusted processes, etc. etc.

AIS now has so many options for users to change there should be some kind of file accessible from the GUI that lists all the options that users can change, their descriptions, what the default settings and current setting are of those options as well as the dates associated with each and the location in the GUI where the option can changed

This would be extremely helpful to new users and those who have upgraded.

Of course most agree that Avast should also have a way for users to keep their old settings whenever there is new install done using the installer.

The program is adding so many options that it really is starting to become a "Forum" post generator especially for new users.

This would be really helpful to new users

Yes It will be released when it is released..   I have noticed when you want like 3:00 get here was it will seem like it is taking forever and when you don't think about it, it will get here faster.  Basically Don't worry when another release cause it might make the next Release take longer to get here. :P

Yes, should be locked and anyone reporting a problem with this build should confirm (or otherwise) if it has been resolved in the 6.0.1086 topic.

Or if they created a topic specifically about their problem, make it resolved by 6.0.1086, etc...
